You might have encountered a multitude of terms like DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), D&I (Diversity and Inclusion), IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility), DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging), DEIJ (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice), and more. Phew! It can be quite a mouthful, right? But here’s the deal: while the acronyms vary, the essence remains the same. So, why so many variations? The choice of acronym often depends on context, organizational goals, and evolving societal needs. They reflect the evolving conversation around DEI. Each variation puts a slightly different spin on things, but the ultimate goal remains constant: creating a world where every individual is valued, empowered, and has equal opportunities to thrive. What truly matters is not the letters but the actions and commitment behind them. So, whether you're all about DEI, D&I, IDEA, DEIB, DEIJ, or any other variation, the shared goal is creating a world where diversity is celebrated, equity is a reality, inclusion is the norm, and justice is upheld. Sadly I can't make the #SUIG Conference in wonderful Glasgow tomorrow, but try and hunt down my Acumen (Part of Sannam S4 Group) colleagues, Sagar Bahadur, Kate Barnes and Cecilia Pereira-Yates and say a big hello! There's no doubt that 2024 will be an interesting, challenging year, but a year of opportunity never-the-less. Universities will need to shift their attentions to other areas (such as smarter conversion strategies), diversify international strategies, focus on different markets and seek alternative revenue streams.
