Today we celebrate National Hospital at Home Patients Day. This day recognizes the incredible advancements in healthcare that allow patients to receive hospital-level care from the comfort of their own homes. Thanks to the dedication of healthcare professionals and innovative technologies, patients can now experience personalized care tailored to their needs while surrounded by the love and support of family. It's also worth noting the attention lawmakers are giving the movement. Congress is considering extending the Acute Hospital at Home waiver for five years.

I support this but HCMC also needs to understand that if they would have better social work staffing it would help reduce these issues. Social work is the single most easily modifiable factor in reducing length of stay and preventable readmissions. Social workers are the people that find people safe places to go and with decreased placement options it takes more work: more referrals, more creative thinking, more knowledge of resources and options, and more communication with caregivers and supports to figure out a good plan, and all of that takes more social work! We just don’t have time to do everything and meet all patient needs and that increases length of stay. More Social Work=reduced length of stay. Work on the issue on both ends and listen to frontline staff.
Hennepin Healthcare CEO Jennifer DeCubellis told a Minnesota Senate committee that people stuck in the hospital, with nowhere else to go, have more people in HCMC beds than during COVID. Many no longer need medical treatment, and their care isn’t being paid for, she told senators. #mnleg
