#TBT Throwback Thursday Thoughts: 1. Find #opportunity & #networking when you are out 2. We don't do enough to support our #Veterans. ------- 1. Roy Y. Salisbury and I were taking a break from the office and working outside, where we almost always end up engaged in conversation with new people. In this case Martez Evans II overheard us talking business, and saw the #marines hat Roy was wearing, and introduced himself. as a Veteran of the US Army. We spent time discussing what we all do, and Martez' history, current pursuits, and future plans. You never know where these types of conversations can go, and props to Martez for introducing himself to us. Cold intros are not easy and take some guts. 2. Why do we wait for Veterans Day and Memorial Day to acknowledge our Veterans? And even then many of the corporate ads are bullshit, as a secret they would never share include a propensity to NOT hire Veterans. Another fact many hiring managers and recruiters would deny. At Stony Hill Advisors, Inc. we stand fast and proudly of our support for Veterans. 3. I miss beer and bourbon. Been dry since Christmas. Not even a taste.

Would you like to see more Veterans drawn to Arizona's workforce from across the nation? That is the topic of my Phoenix Business Journal article. More than ever, Arizona must step up and vigorously attract military Veterans and their spouses from across the nation to meet the state's demand for labor and propel our economic growth. The state’s robust economy, overheated hiring market, cooling housing prices, world-class quality of life and expansive military-support ecosystem are ideal conditions for military-connected talent. Without a nationwide Veteran talent attraction strategy, Arizona lags behind. Let’s start with a website that touts the advantages for military-connected families to work and live in the Grand Canyon State, participation in large military base and nationwide Veteran-hiring events and strategically placed ads in military-hiring focused publications. The Arizona Legislature can make this opportunity a reality. Ask your legislator to support bills that captivate and entice Veteran talent to move here and help us better prepare for the workplace of tomorrow. Retired Marine and former Corporate leader. I tell stories of my corporate life to help others better understand the true culture of large corporations.
I was asked what career fields, in my experience, were Veterans most happy. Thought I would provide a list of very broad career fields. First and last were no brainers. #militarytransition #veteranshelpingveterans #veterans #marines #leadership Happy to Sad: 1. Business owners-make your own rules. Hire people that think like you. 2. Law enforcement/First responders-team mentality, giving back, making a difference. 3. Government-low stress, little supervision, plug along to retirement. 4. Small business-Direct line to the owner if you have an issue. 5. Large corporations-Office politics, horrible leaders, lack of true values. Your Thoughts?

This Veterans Day, I’m proud to announce the formation of our Veterans Employee Resource group (VERG) here at Fox Factory. Yesterday we had our first event welcoming Brian Flynn as a guest speaker to talk about his personal journey in the US Army Special Forces, the Two Wolf Foundation, and to discuss the importance of the VERG mission. When forming VERG, we had an end goal of going beyond just saying “thank you for your service,” and instead finding ways to give back and help our Veteran community find purpose beyond the scope of their military service. Perhaps we can help veterans assimilate back to civilian life by offering unique opportunities at Fox and in our communities. I believe Fox offers a lot of opportunity to find a greater purpose, to achieve fulfillment and to give back to our community. I am proud to be the exec sponsor for this initiative. Our guest speaker, Brian Flynn, is the embodiment of our core values. His foundation, Two Wolf, is already a recipient of our Trail Trust grant, but their mission is never done and they have so many great things planned in the future. I hope we can continue to support him and their mission of promoting healing for veterans suffering from post traumatic stress, and help establish purpose for veterans who return to civilian life by connecting them with the outdoors. I highly encourage my network to contribute to Two Wolf Foundation in any capacity. And as we enter Veterans Day weekend, I hope we can all take the time to reflect on the freedoms granted to us by those who serve, and to find a way to say “thank you for your service.” I encourage anyone to contact me if they have ideas on how an employee resource group can create lasting #impact and #makeadifference #veteransday #veterans #veteranemployment #servicemembers #Culture #impact #employeeresourcegroups

The hilarious meme aside, loss of identity and purpose is a very real thing and, yes, it can feel like a freight train hitting when least expected. #veteranshelpingveterans I would argue it feels more like an infected wound that refuses to heal. The process can be extremely slow, annoyingly painful, and can have serious consequences if left unchecked. What worked for me was seeing and experiencing how other countries deal with it. As an example, in Israel (gross oversimplification ahead), for better or for worse, post-military service mentalities are nowhere similar to ours. I’ve tried multiple times to speak with Israelis about their military service and I can best describe it as asking an American about working at Stop and Shop; it’s just an experience. Obviously, the ‘mandated’ element of Israel’s military service plays a huge role in the backdrop behind U.S. voluntary military service, but I suspect it’s more than just that. Individual results may differ! But seeing military service treated as taking out the garbage (with no special or endearing treatment, no stickers, unit patches, bumper stickers, rank, or license plates), was strange at first — almost uncaring or depressing — but it actually helped me understand that although it is not ‘nothing’, it is merely a ‘chapter’ in a long life. In other words, I view the veteran identity as a dial more so than an on/off switch, and I avoid those who treat it as a switch like the plague. We have 'speaking AS A VETERAN' memes for a reason; there's a kernel of truth to our identity politics—unique to the United States (I follow all the ‘as a veteran’ folks in D.C., and, for me, having broken away from that mentality and the silly internal squabbles, I’ve freed up a lot of the ‘lack of identity’ issues I faced years ago because it was merely a chapter, not the entire book of my life. I’m also not the only one who has figured this out; I have a long list of professionals I follow who express similar opinions. There’s plenty more out there folks, all the best! #veterans #veteransaffairs #mentalhealth

“I hear the train a comin' it's rollin' 'round the bend” - Johnny Cash Sadly, a lot of our #transitioningservicemembers don’t hear or see this train. Many are blinded by a false sense of security that is portrayed by corporate America, #veterans, and “statistics”. - I was. At 14 years I thought I had the experience, skills, and knowledge ANYONE would want. I thought veteran preference was standard. I thought I was ready for the impact of the train… I thought wrong. This isn’t to say companies aren’t ‘veteran friendly’ because, a lot are! A lot mean well. A lot want to make a difference in the lives of veterans and military families. But, they don’t understand how we, the veteran, don’t know how to help the process either. I will say this. If it weren’t for the trials and tribulations I went through for almost two years after leaving active duty. If it weren’t for the two amazing companies that took me in at the beginning of my civilian career (Buffkin / Baker, StaffSource) I wouldn’t be where I am or who I am today. Thankfully, with my career at Premise Health I have found my identity and purpose and that is giving back to the military community. If you are a #veteran or #militaryspouse looking for identity, purpose, or a career please, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I truly enjoy being an advocate for veterans and military spouses and will do all I can to help get you to where you belong. Semper Fidelis
