Terry O'Day, COO and Cofounder at InCharge Energy, was recently interviewed on the pressing topic of solving for EV charging at scale in a discussion with King Energy, leading provider of energy solutions to multi-tenant properties. In that interview, O’Day shared invaluable insights on options for accelerating the availability of EV charging across the United States. With 25+ years in the EV industry (and a decade of service on the Santa Monica city council), he discussed how community leaders and property owners can benefit by properly preparing for the transition to electrification. The initial growth in EV adoption was a driving factor that led O’Day to his current venture, InCharge Energy, a charging solutions provider for commercial fleets. As demand for large-scale EV fleet deployment grows, InCharge Energy supports businesses investing in electrification with end-to-end turnkey solutions: planning and installation, infrastructure, reliable charging hardware, open API charge management software, and long-term maintenance supported by a team of in-house service experts. Noting that regulatory and technological factors, incentives, and greater public education are important to the overall transition to EVs, O’Day posits that commercial property owners wishing to maximize the value of EV charging installations at their properties by partnering with third-party solution providers, such as InCharge, to provide strategic guidance and to manage relevant risk. Bidirectional charging is a groundbreaking technology in the electric vehicle (EV) landscape that enables the flow of electricity not only from the power grid to the vehicle (as in traditional charging) but also from the vehicle back to the grid. This two-way exchange of energy allows electric vehicles to not only consume electricity but also to serve as potential energy sources. The key feature of bidirectional charging is its ability to turn an electric vehicle into a mobile energy storage unit. Through Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) or Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) systems, bidirectional charging allows electric vehicles to discharge stored energy back to the grid or to power homes and appliances. Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) capability will allow EV owners to be more than just drivers – they become contributors to grid resilience. The versatility of EV batteries, equipped with AC power outlets, will reshape the foundation of our energy infrastructure, making each EV a potential contributor to grid stability. Legislation in California, proposing mandatory V2G capability for all EVs sold post-2027, is a noteworthy development. It underscores a recognition of bidirectional charging pivotal role in fortifying grid resilience and fostering cleaner energy practices. Because, beyond emission reduction, bidirectional charging supports a comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability. It facilitates the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid, reducing reliance on conventional power generation. This dual impact on both emissions and energy sources highlights bidirectional charging role in fostering a cleaner and greener world. #NeuronEnergy #BidirectionalCharging #EVInnovation #SustainableFuture

The growing push towards vehicle electrification presents both challenges and opportunities for fleet operators and utilities alike. As companies commit to electrifying their fleets, the need for robust charging infrastructure and timely grid planning becomes critical. The complexity of both transportation and electricity networks, coupled with potential lags in grid investments, could slow down this transition. However, by fostering proactive collaboration, fleets and utilities can become leaders in the electrification space. The key to successful collaboration lies in effective information sharing. Fleet operators need to develop new expertise in engaging with utilities, understanding their operations, and navigating regulatory frameworks. On the other hand, utilities must adapt their planning processes to accommodate the unique demands of electric vehicle (EV) fleets, which differ significantly from traditional building loads. By sharing detailed charging plans and energy demands, fleets can help utilities optimize grid operations and infrastructure planning, potentially avoiding costly delays. Tools like RMI’s GridUp can facilitate this collaboration by providing utilities with critical data on how grid operations will be impacted by EV charging. This information allows for more efficient and cost-effective infrastructure upgrades, ensuring that the electrification of transportation happens smoothly and in sync with grid capabilities. As the EV revolution accelerates, such partnerships will be essential to meeting electrification targets and supporting the broader transition to a sustainable energy future. #Electrification #Utilities #Decarbonization https://lnkd.in/eFK2RWhj
