This week at IPL, we celebrated NAIDOC Week across our Australian-based sites, embracing the rich cultural history of our First Nations Peoples. The 2024 theme, ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’, highlights the enduring strength and vitality of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Here’s a snapshot of some of the events held across our Australian sites including IPL’s CEO Mauro Neves taking part in a Symbolic Art Drawing Workshop at our Southbank Office and a NAIDOC week event at Dyno Nobel’s Curragh site, where employees enjoyed cake and important conversations on what NAIDOC week means to them. Our IPL RAP Working Group is dedicated to advancing our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan, with a strong focus on increasing participation rates among First Nations employees. Let's keep the fire burning and continue to celebrate and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. #NAIDOC2024 #KeepTheFireBurning #BlakLoudProud #IPL #ReconciliationActionPlan #FirstNations

Discover the meaning behind the 2024 NAIDOC Poster💫 As CDEs, you have a unique opportunity to amplify the cultural significance of NAIDOC Week through the powerful 2024 National NAIDOC Poster. The poster, titled "Urapun Muy", was created by Torres Strait Islander artist Deb Belyea. In the Torres Strait Islander Kalaw Kawaw Ya dialect, "Urapun Muy" translates to "One Fire".🔥 This title "pays homage to Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginal people everywhere, as we all have that one fire: our passion for our culture," explains Deb. As Deb says, "Culture is the fire that gives us knowledge, wisdom and purpose. It is our responsibility to maintain, practice, and pass on our fire to our future generations."🔥 By engaging with and sharing the deeper meaning behind the 2024 NAIDOC Poster, let's spread this message and ensure that we pass on the fire, too.🙌 💭What other ways can CDEs meaningfully participate in and support NAIDOC Week? ## Unity Beyond the Pitch: Lessons from AFCON 2023 The final whistle of AFCON 2023 may have blown, but the echoes of its unifying spirit continue to resonate across the continent. From the vibrant opening ceremony to the nail-biting matches, the tournament transcended the beautiful game, offering a powerful message: **unity is our strength**. **Beyond Borders and Backgrounds:** * **National Pride:** Flags of all participating nations fluttered proudly, reminding us that despite differences in ethnicity, religion, or language, we are all part of the African family. * **Shared Passion:** The roar of the crowd, the collective gasps at missed goals, and the eruption of joy at victories transcended individual allegiances, creating a sense of shared passion and celebration. * **Community Spirit:** From fan zones to viewing centers, people from all walks of life came together to cheer on their teams, fostering a sense of community and belonging. **A Call to Action:** While AFCON 2023 served as a powerful symbol of unity, it's crucial to recognize that this spirit must extend beyond the football field. We, the people, must: * **Resist Division:** Be wary of attempts by leaders to exploit our differences for their own gain. Remember, unity is not about uniformity, but about respecting and celebrating our diversity. * **Promote Dialogue:** Engage in open and respectful dialogue with those who hold different views, fostering understanding and building bridges. * **Embrace Shared Goals:** Work together towards common goals that benefit everyone, such as improving education, healthcare, and infrastructure. **Remember:** The unity witnessed in AFCON 2023 was not a magical occurrence. It was built on a foundation of shared passion, respect, and a collective desire for a better future. Let this tournament be a reminder that we, the people, have the power to overcome our differences and build a more united and prosperous Africa. Let us not allow our leaders to divide us, but rather let us use the lessons of AFCON 2023 to push for a future where **unity is not a slogan, but a reality**. **Together, we can achieve anything.** We can make AFRICA GREAT AGAIN AND FOREVER. How can we advance the equitable inclusion of #refugees in education? Let’s start by understanding the needs of students with and seeking refugee protection. Check out the colloquium that I gave on the needs of students with and seeking refugee protection globally and across Canada. https://lnkd.in/gUmSKDbX Many thanks to Peter Milley, PhD, CRSEC-CRECS, and SSHRC-CRSH! Despite data increasingly being used to advance equity in education, students with and seeking refugee protection are largely invisible in education data. This presentation highlights the findings of an assessment of the needs of this group of students in primary and secondary education globally and then across Canada. The methods involved the use of experts, a literature review, and a review of public data. Five areas of need were identified: education access, accelerated education, language education, mental health and psychosocial support, and special education. Rates of needs varied by a range of factors. Insights into responsively supporting these students across Canadian education systems will be discussed. #education #withrefugees #inclusion

This week is National NAIDOC Week and a time for us to celebrate the rich cultural heritage, achievements, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. NAIDOC Week dates back to 1938 when Aboriginal leaders gathered for the Day of Mourning, calling for full citizenship status and improved lives for First Nations people. Join us in celebrating all First Nations people as the first people to live on the beautiful lands on which we reside, and the ongoing excellence of First Nations communities who have over 60,000 years of knowledge and connection to Country. The 2024 NAIDOC theme is ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Black, Loud & Proud’, a call to honour the enduring spirit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. As acknowledged in the Australian Government's National Strategic Action Plan for Rare Diseases, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are a priority population of the rare disease sector. While Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are not necessarily at greater risk of rare diseases, several factors increase the potential impact of rare diseases on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The lack of research into rare diseases means our knowledge on which rare diseases are most prevalent among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is incomplete. Given the genetic basis of most rare diseases, research exploring this is vital. To explore history, connect with local communities, and support First Nations artists and businesses, search your local NAIDOC Week events here: https://brnw.ch/21wL9PU #NAIDOC2024 #NAIDOCWeek

We did this and it was AWESOME. I spoke on the topic Cyberwise: Securing Africa's Digital Future where I spoke about how thinking differently about cybersecurity as more of a people problem than just a technical issue, establishing a continental collaborative policy where African countries work together, share resources and remove bottlenecks and making cyber security laws very responsive and human focused by including cyber Trauma Counseling for victims. I called it the T. E. A. Truly life changing.
