Steve Jobs shares a story of his neighbor, an old man who turned normal ugly rocks into beautiful polished rocks in a tumbler (in the 2nd half of this video). This is his metaphor for a team working hard on something they are passionate about. “It’s through the team, bumping up against each other, having arguments, having fights sometimes, making some noise. What a great listen. “Great ideas” are just “that”. That is not what will get you where you need/can be. It’s all about the PROCESS of a team working together to make magic happen.

Simply perfect. From an idea to a product.

Such a powerful metaphor, likening the polishing of rocks to team members coming together with their differences and perspectives, discussing, arguing, exploring and understanding each other to produce the best possible result. We avoid friction and conflict because it is intimidating, difficult and tiring. But sometimes, it it necessary for better customer understanding, product design, decision-making, innovation... Tell to me about diversity without telling me about diversity.

In this video, Steve Jobs explains the transformative power of novel ideas. He highlights a crucial insight: the misconception that merely having a great idea is 90% of the work. At Apple, they learned that simply articulating an idea to colleagues is not enough. It’s the "tremendous amount of craftsmanship" and effort that goes into refining and developing that idea which turns it into a great product. Jobs likens the process to a rusty old stone polisher, where rough stones with sharp edges and irregular corners are tumbled together until they become shiny and polished. Similarly, when extremely talented people come together, they take a raw, novel idea and work on it meticulously. Through collaboration and diving into the "subtleties", this idea eventually transforms into something truly remarkable. This journey emphasises that the true value of a novel idea is realised only when the entire process is allowed to play out seamlessly.
