Provider and Nurse Burnout In an article by Connor Bice & Miles Hepworth, published 01/22/2024, the authors reported on the findings of survey performed by KLAS Research of more than 20,000 physicians and 32,000 nurses between January 2022 and August 2023. The key findings were: · Burnout rates are leveling to slightly decreasing but remain about pre-pandemic levels. · Respondents cited staffing shortages as a key contributor (54%), followed by after-hours workload (45%). · Other factors were lack of control over their workload and EHR inhibiting efficiency and quality. · Respondents classified as “starting” to feel burnout, also cited operational inefficiencies whereas people already “burned-out” cited organizational issues. Both physicians and nurses thought solutions included improved staffing to reduce patient panel size, reduction in excessive bureaucratic tasks, and fixing inefficient workflows. Both groups also wanted better alignment with leadership – being heard, being understood, and feeling supported. Physicians also asked for “improved EHR efficiency.” Whereas nurses wanted better pay – to improve retention and lessen the value differential between staff nurses and travel nurses. As a process improvement practitioner, I see potential to reduce burnout by improving operations to reduce chaos and retain staff. Decentralized decision making can restore autonomy, engagement, and alignment. EHRs are here to stay and many of them were implemented without fixing the processes – the time has come to fix the processes around using an EHR. Unfortunately, staffing shortages will not be resolved overnight – let’s optimize scheduling and provide flexibility as a stabilizing starting point. And let’s improve communication between leaders and all staff: physicians, ancillary providers, nurses, techs, and the plethora of people that are part of providing health care. What are your thoughts on my ideas around improving the work to reduce burnout? What other ideas do you have? If you would like to chat or if I can be of assistance, please let me know. Managing Principal | Health Care Strategy, Financial Management, and Generational Healthcare AI Leader
Addressing America’s healthcare crisis involves a multifaceted approach. Here are some strategies that various experts and I would suggest: Pay for Results, Not Actions: Shift the focus from the quantity of healthcare services provided to the quality and outcomes of care. Business-Driven Healthcare Delivery: Manage healthcare systems like businesses, with competition aimed at delivering better health outcomes at lower costs. Competition Across Health Industries: Encourage all health-related industries to compete based on making people healthier at more affordable costs. Learning from Successful Models: Analyze and implement best practices from both employer-driven and government-run health systems that have proven successful. Additionally, other priorities include: Focus on Prevention: Prioritize preventive care to keep people healthy rather than just treating them when they are sick. Tackle Racial Disparities: Address and reduce racial disparities in healthcare access and outcomes. Expand Telehealth and In-Home Services: Increase the use of telehealth services and provide more in-home care options. Build Integrated Systems: Develop integrated healthcare systems that coordinate various aspects of patient care. Adopt Value-Based Care: Embrace value-based care models that incentivize healthcare providers to deliver high-quality care efficiently. These solutions aim to create a more effective, equitable, and sustainable healthcare system. #healthcaretransformation #healthcarefinance #healthsystems #healthcareinnovation #staffingshortages #patientsafety #AI #evidencebasedmedicine #valuebasedhealthcare https://lnkd.in/eF4PEsfA

“Embracing technology to streamline care transitions will be a win/win for providers and patients. Taking friction out of the healthcare environment in 2024 will allow us to streamline care and reduce administrative burdens for all clinical staff, not just doctors. As the industry embraces value-based care, we need to consider all of the ways that technology can help organizations be successful in these value-based care arrangements. In 2024 we will see more organizations embracing customized technology (AI, language models) to curate personalized insights and drive risk models. This will in turn result in more accurate care and enhanced efficiencies on the provider side.” - B.J. Boyle, Chief Product Officer, PointClickCare.
