I was supposed to be in the Trajectify Philly office today. And all of my city appointments asked to be moved to virtual. I won't complain too much. It made it easier for me to get to my polling place in the burbs for Pennsylvania's primary election. (Vote!) Still, it's a phenomenon that concerns me. More and more, stakeholders who had chosen to meet in person (their preference) ultimately succumb to virtual because they're too busy. I get it that working virtual is a more efficient use of the clock. Back-to-back meetings sitting in one chair. No need to allow for travel time. But is it a more effective use of your time? There are no replacements for opportunities to connect face to face. To be totally present. To get the full impact of conversation, body language, and emotions. Let's try to be less busy. It's not becoming to fill our hours with too many things to do. You've seen me write often about the appearance of busy-ness. By the way, I think the same thing applies to events. I know we're going to fewer in person events than we used to pre-pandemic. You still need to attend some! I now skip the big, all-purpose events (like I used to run with Philly New Tech Meetup), or those events simply for networking, in favor of more intimate, niche, or content-rich events, like those from Philadelphia-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Independence Business Alliance, or PSPS: Philadelphia Society of People & Strategy. You don't need to get out of the office all the time. Still, do it sometimes. More often than you do it now, okay? The depth of your connections will grow. And you'll increase your chances for serendipitous collisions. I thought I looked pretty cute when I walked out the door today. I guess now only the poll workers will have seen me 😏

A deep bow of gratitude to Harrison Owen ~ marking his passing into the most spacious Open Space on March 16. Many of you who know me professionally have heard me speak about Harrison Owen the originator of Open Space Technology, when I've opened the circle before agenda creation at IIW or some other company meeting/event. About how he had noticed that all the 'good stuff' at events, conferences or company meetings happened during the coffee breaks and that he had the inspiration, with the help of two martinis, to find a meeting method/structure that was all 'coffee break energy' all the time! Harrison never said that he was the inventor of this self organizing method rather that it has always existed and we all operate in self organizing ways all the time. He never trademarked the method, you don't have to become certified to try it. You simply need to give it a go ~ follow the well and thoroughly considered set up, sit in a circle, share the Five Principles, One Law and important roles of the 🐝& 🦋with those who are gathered around the topic they were passionate about. Stay out of the way during agenda creation, and be prepared to be surprised! Afterwards, to report back on how the experience went. Following these seemingly simple guidelines is not as easy as it looks. The desire for control arises quickly (in both facilitators and clients) along with the fear of perceived lack of control over an event or meeting. However, once you mess with the formula, because you think you can improve it, the potential is diminished and the magic reported by both first time and repeat participants disappears in seen and unseen ways. I love this quote by my colleague Phil Windley, co-founder of the Internet Identity Workshop - that has used Open Space twice a year for the past 19 years to work on the snarly issue of internet identity. "Allowing groups to self-organize, set their own agendas, and decide without central guidance or planning requires being vulnerable and trusting. But the results are worth the risk." I met Harrison in 2008 when I was part of the organizing team for the 14th (?) annual World Open Space on Open Space in San Francisco. Encountering and learning how to facilitate Open Space (from the fabulous Lisa Heft) changed the course of my life. After being a Human Resource Director and Consultant (who was expected to have the answers) I love working with this non-facilitator centric methodology in all types of settings for all types of purposes witnessing the creativity, innovation and Harrison wrote numerous books about the power of self organizing and opening space. This is my favorite one - Expanding Our Now / The Story of Open Space A large global community of practitioners is remembering and celebrating Harrison and his gift to us all. As we each move on and continue to open space we will hear his voice in our ear telling us to 'think of one less thing to do.' Here's to Opening Space and Expanding Our Now ~

Ultimately, pursuing opportunities to connect with industry leaders or professionals with varying interests and perspectives is critical to your own career growth. However, networking can be exhausting -- and, at the end of a long work day, it might be the last thing you want to do. When you're sitting at your desk unsure if you're actually going to go to the networking event you've had penciled on your calendar, it's important you muster up both the energy and the motivation to power through and channel the confidence you need to make authentic connections. #dublinroomhire #meetingroom #dublincity #meetingroom #meeting #coworking #coworkingspace #virtualoffice #office #officespace #business #conferenceroom #workspace #meetingspace #interiordesign #officedesign #meetings #eventspace #hotel #startup #workplace #work #coworkspace #irishcreativesociety
