🔍 What is the Current State of Animal Welfare Across the EU? 🐾 What more can be done to improve the welfare of livestock maintained for production? In this enlightening discussion, Euractiv hosted three experts to share their insights: - Frank Verdonck from European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), who discussed EFSA's recent work and publications 📝 - Ana Granados Chapatte from EFFAB - European Forum of Farm Animal Breeders, representing animal breeders - Jo Swabe from Humane Society International - Europe, a non-profit organisation aiming for improved animal protection Topics discussed include: the Welfare of Laying Hens (Banning cage use) 🐔 and the Welfare of Pigs (Issues like tail docking) 🐖 It's always intriguing when representatives from diverse organizations come together to voice their opinions. While opinions may differ, the shared goal is clear: improving animal welfare. No one likes to see animals in pain or maltreated. Let's see which parts of EFSA's opinions the European Commission will implement into policy and legislation as part of its Farm to Fork Strategy. 🎧 Listen to the discussion here: https://lnkd.in/dKC9HiBe #AnimalWelfare #EFSA #FarmToFork #Livestock

Get ready to contact. And lobby all of these as they are created because you can guarantee that the RSPCA will be begging them for powers, especially those created by the Animal Welfare Act 2006. “The RSPCA will be monitoring the English Devolution Bill closely as new powers for metro-mayors and combined authorities could potentially open up. opportunities for improved animal welfare policies at a more local level, and local solutions to animal welfare challenges.” https://lnkd.in/e2XHHsGq

Eurogroup for Animals Interesting survey data. We should focus on the 1 welfare and 1 health iniciatives to improve animal welfare
According to a new survey by BEUC - The European Consumer Organisation, which aimed to analyse consumer’s attitudes on #animalwelfare, almost 9/10 consumers responded that they support better animal welfare laws for animals raised for consumption, and believe that the #EU should act to update legislation to offer them protection. The new voluntary codes of practice released recently by the seafood industry fail to protect millions of crabs, lobsters, prawns and nephrops from agonising injuries and deaths. Despite our engagement in the process and strong recommendations to ban cruel practices which result in poor welfare, we were disappointed to see that they are still permitted in these 'guidelines'. Cruel practices still permitted include: ❌Boiling alive ❌Freezing to death ❌Tearing animals apart or cutting into pieces while still alive ❌Removal of their claws ❌Cutting tendons to immobilise claws ❌The sale of live decapods to members of the public Decapods deserve more. They urgently need full protection in the various Animal Welfare Acts of the UK. Voluntary low welfare codes of practice do not promote or enforce best practice in the care of decapod crustaceans. We need the UK government to act now! Decapods were legally recognised as being sentient in 2022, and yet still receive little to no protection in the UK. ✍️Sign our petition now to urge the government to close this loophole https://buff.ly/3yoyYwI Stop Crustacean Cruelty, Show Crustacean Compassion! #DemandMoreForDecapods

A couple of weeks' ago, I participated in a 'triangle debate' on farm #animalwelfare in the EU organised by Euractiv. I'm glad to have had this podium to continue pushing this issue on the EU policy agenda, because the European Commission failed to fully deliver on its #EUFarmtoFork commitments to revise & expand the scope of the existing body of EU animal welfare legislation, as well as its pledge - in response to the #EndTheCageAge European Citizens' Initiative - to deliver a legislative proposal to end caged confinement for farm animals by the end of 2023. As I argue here, the welfare problems experienced by animals kept for food production are not going to be solved without decisive political action. Farm animals will continue to suffer unless the necessary steps are taken to adequately meet their complex & species-specific welfare needs. Humane Society International - Europe is calling on newly (re)elected MEPs to continue to put pressure on the Commission to deliver on its animal welfare commitments in this new legislative term. #EUpolicy #animalagriculture #farming #animalprotection #farmanimals

My latest article on the new law banning live exports on Comment Central today. Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation applaud this historic measure which sends a powerful message across the world. We hope it will not be the first ban in Europe for long and that other countries will follow Great Britain’s lead and introduce their own bans on live export https://lnkd.in/d7nHTwvs
