I worked in an environmental management company for a year, where I received extensive training and even got promoted. However, I decided to quit, thinking that my one-year experience would easily land me another job. To my surprise, I was jobless for nearly a month. During those three weeks, I wondered why I hadn’t secured a job despite my experience. That’s when I realized the importance of choosing the right branch in civil engineering. I decided to focus on municipal design, a field related to my experience in stormwater management. I quickly learned what the industry was looking for, honed my skills, and landed a job within three days of preparation. Reflecting on my earlier job applications, I noticed I had applied for positions in transportation and other branches where I had little to no experience. My success came from leveraging my specific skills in stormwater management, aligning them with industry needs, and targeting the right branch. The key takeaway: Choosing your branch is the first step in civil engineering. Instead of applying to 100 jobs in various fields, focus on one branch you are familiar with from your studies or previous work. Begin your licensing process, learn the necessary software, and prepare thoroughly for interviews. With this focused approach, you will significantly increase your chances of landing a job.
