Recently, the California Health Care Foundation and our health care community partners shared with the California Assembly Health Committee how state leaders can help create a more diverse health care workforce, and how such efforts can improve patients’ health access, experiences, and outcomes. What are solutions for building a workforce that align with state’s population, especially the 15 million Californians enrolled in Medi-Cal? 🔹 Improve the disaggregation of data to better understand the language needs of Medi-Cal patients. 🔹 Increase academic scholarship funding and student loan repayment resources for early career professionals who want to work in underserved communities. 🔹 Advance holistic admission processes at all health profession schools in California, especially medical, dental, and pharmacy programs. 🔹 Bolster allied health profession partnerships between California Community Colleges and California State University campuses. “There are no spot fixes,” said CHCF’s Kathryn E. Phillips. “Our health workforce is a critical infrastructure. It’s the infrastructure of care. And just like our roads or our bridges, we need regular assessment. We need infrastructure upgrades. Our workforce deserves more. Our patients need care.” So great to be with our partners at this hearing! I could not agree more! Speaking from my own rewarding career in #healthcare, we should all be focused on the next generation of leaders. It will take all of us to promote this industry within student organizations, professional networks, family, and friends. Do not forget that #healthcarejobs are more than the clinical or operations departments, it also includes careers in culinary/dietary services. We are stronger together! #curaproud #ittakesavillage #careergoals #leadershipdevelopment

Project Manager, Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Health; Author of "Health Care of a Thousand Slights" (Winter 2020)
Grateful to have heard from some great minds - Eboné Carrington, Gbenga Ogedegbe, MD, MPH, FACP, and Thomas D'Aunno -- at NYU Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service's annual #KovnerBehrman Forum. It was great to see one of my favorite professors in action alongside one of my best friends from grad school Dennis Grishin. Some key insights: 🏥 While referring the most vulnerable patients to other agencies for #SDOH needs has value, the trusting #patientprovider relationship is key. ⚖ Health systems have to strike a balance between relying on #communitybasedorganizations and providing these services themselves, which may cause #missiondrift. 💲 Quote from Dr. Ogedegbe: "Evidence-based medicine is only as good as the resources we invest in them." 🤝 Investing in training #communityhealthworkers will be critical as we rely on them to not just strengthen relationships between the community and the health system, but also shift non-clinical tasks away from providers. 👍 Quote from moderator Lauren A Taylor: "What we decide is possible or not possible determines our managerial prescriptions."
