Did you know that there are around 250,000 different species of flowering plants? 250,000 🌺🌸🌻🌼🪷🌹🥀🪻🌷 But less than 80 of them live in the sea. And they’re all species of seagrass. Here's five things you absolutely must know about seagrasses: 🗺️ Seagrasses are found living in coastal waters of every continent except for Antarctica, partly because it’s quite chilly there. 🦖 Seagrasses didn’t always live in the sea. Between 70,000 - 100,000 million years ago (that’s during the Cretaceous period), seagrasses evolved from the same group of flowering plants that include wheat, ginger, and lilies. For the plant lovers, that’s the monocots group. 🧬 Seagrass can clone itself! In Shark Bay, Western Australia, the species Poseidon’s ribbon weed made a baby with a different species of seagrass (we don’t know which one). That single hybrid seagrass created new shoots from its roots to create a clone of itself. Then again. And again…. and again… and again! So much so, in fact, that it now spans some 180 kilometres! That makes it the largest known clone on Earth. 🧓 Seagrass can get old… really old. Off the coast of Formentera, Spain, one 15-kilometre-wide seagrass meadow could be between 80,000 and 200,000 years old! In contrast, the Shark Bay seagrass dates back just 4,500 years. 🔎 You can help researchers learn more about seagrasses (and help us take better care of them, too)! All you have to do is send photos of seagrass to Project Seagrass using their SeagrassSpotter App. You don’t have to be able to identify the species, but if you think you know what it is, you can give them that information, too (https://lnkd.in/gFX_wr-h).

Ever wonder what #anemones eat? In this highlight video from #ROVHercules’ exploration of Nafanua Cone on #VailuluuSeamount, we watched in real-time as an #anemone made a meal of a nearby #isopod. Both pink critters were living on the slopes of this active underwater #volcano within the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa. #Seaanemones are predators that use their tentacles covered with stinger cells (cnidocytes) containing barbs to catch prey like zooplankton, fish, worms, marine larvae, mussels, and (unfortunately for this crustacean) isopods. Witnessing predation events in the deep sea rarely happens but provides important data to better understand seafloor food chains. https://lnkd.in/ePgYPsZq

👉 New article: "Subterranean to submarine: stress-induced locomotor repertoire expansion and aquatic escape in the Anatolian mole rat (Nannospalax xanthodon) under risk of predation" You can find it here: https://lnkd.in/dSCSYXXM Many thanks to my co-authors Stavroula Zotou, Aris Iliou, and Apostolos Christopoulos. Special thanks to the Journal of Ethology and Springer Nature Group for supporting our work! In this article, we report a combination of highly unusual behavioral responses displayed by an individual N. xanthodon when encountering the risk of predation. Specifically, we present the first recorded instance of a N. xanthodon exhibiting an escape behavior—entering and swimming in an unfamiliar aquatic environment, triggered by a near-predation event involving a domesticated mammal.

The cheetah is the fastest land animal but it can NEVER successfully compete with the slowest bird in the air. A cheetah can't fly. It can only run. LAND is the cheetah's DOMAIN. AIR is the bird's DOMAIN. When you operate from your DOMAIN/STRENGTHS, you could become a king. But when you operate outside your DOMAIN/STRENGTHS, you can only become second-best at most, throw yourself into endless competitions & comparisons, and maybe feel unfulfilled/worn-out. You can never successfully compete with and win a person who is a MASTER OF HIS DOMAIN! Discover your DOMAIN/ STRENGTHS, today. Gain MASTERY and rule your territory! • #moseschibueze
