Ocean Exploration Trust

While previous #OECI technology collaboration cruises have seen #DriX deployed from onboard #EVNautilus, during the E Mamana Ou Gataifale I expedition this year, the team deployed and operated the USV from shore. Traveling missions offshore from an island base opens up many future possibilities for #multivehicleoperations. The University of New Hampshire Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping / NOAA-UNH Joint Hydrographic Center's Val Schmit says, 
 "Our research and engineering agenda on this mission is focused on developing operational models for satellite-based operations, so-called 'over the horizon.' We’re exploring nearly 100 nm offshore at Vailulu’u, and our pilots are onshore here in Pago Pago and Durham, NH. Unfortunately, some expedition efforts have been somewhat thwarted by seas, sometimes approaching 4m (~12 ft, significant wave height). Despite all that, we have been to sea multiple times collecting data and coordinating with other vehicles for as long as three days. DriX seakeeping has performed well, even in very rough weather."

During the E Mamana Ou Gataifale I NA164 expedition, the #CorpsofExploration aboard #EVNautilus teamed up to explore the #biodiversity of the waters of the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa, and specifically the mid-water zone above #VailuluuSeamount. One of the amazing pieces of technology onboard is the University of Rhode Island’s URI Graduate School of Oceanography’s Deep Autonomous Profile Lander (or #DAPLander). https://lnkd.in/ennctx_x The DAP Lander was designed to collect water samples at various #ocean depths to determine physical #oceanographic properties, seawater composition, and biological communities of the deepest places in the world’s ocean. By collecting #environmentalDNA (or #eDNA) from these #watersamples, researchers can see a snapshot of the biodiversity that exists in these remote regions of the #SouthPacific. #OECI NOAA Ocean Exploration

The largest #migration on Earth happens in the water column daily as #midwater organisms cycle following nutrient-rich waters to the shallows and returning to the protection of the twilight darkness. But in many places, this dense biodiverse habitat intersects with another — #seamounts! These underwater mountains, due to their massive size, can create upwelling, bringing #deepsea nutrients upward and enhancing productivity at all levels of the ocean food web. During the E Mamana Ou Gataifale I (NA164) expedition, Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute (#OECI) partners and our #CorpsofExploration came together to explore the #biodiversity of the open-ocean water column using different technologies to understand the impacts of seamounts on this midwater migration.
