Measuring the performance of freight movement across our nation’s highways is critical to understanding where and at what level investments should be made. The information provided through this research empowers decision-making in both the private and public sectors by helping stakeholders better understand how congestion and delays constrain mobility on the U.S. highway transportation system. ATRI’s annual bottleneck list provides a clear roadmap to guide investment decisions as the nation capitalizes on the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to address the nation’s supply chain challenges. Logistics UK's Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Ben Garratt spoke at a Transport Select Committee session this week on the Future of Transport Data. The session explored the opportunity for data to revolutionise the logistics sector. It was also highlighted that data has already created efficiencies, higher standards, and lower carbon emissions within the sector. Logistics UK stressed that there is a wealth of data collected by Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, National Highways, Network Rail, and others, but suggested that collecting this data better would be supported by more strategic data objectives from the sector as a whole. We also highlighted the importance of focusing on goals, rather than having a data-sharing first approach. It is easier to share and aggregate data if the shared purpose is clear. Insightful to hear Parliamentary committee and stakeholders discussing the Future for Data in Logistics! A snippet of the topics raised included developing people skills in the field, making data meaningful and delivering intelligence, advancing tech and the future scope for cross-sector data sharing. Some of the highlights: - A focus as to where the subject sits alongside existing frameworks, including the Government's skills agenda, advancing digital strategy and Generation Logistics. (Not to forget the role of digital and data apprenticeships!) - There isn't necessarily a lack of data, but lots more to be explored in how best its aggregated, made meaningful and providing us with one version of the truth. - Advancing technologies within the Road space - Optimising fleet management, AI in the EV setting including access to vehicle charging, and journey planning. Pilot studies around optimising shipment loading and unloading. - What does the future look like for data sharing? Considering competition in the market, data sharing is largely concentrated vertically, but more to be explored by the industry around horizontal and cross-sector sharing to drive wider industry advancement. https://lnkd.in/eg6_vXMB

What are the biggest logistical challenges faced by the transportation industry today? The transportation industry, the backbone of global commerce, is not without its share of obstacles. With the ever-increasing demands of a rapidly evolving world, the sector constantly faces logistical challenges that threaten to disrupt supply chains and hinder economic growth. Understanding these challenges is crucial for devising effective solutions and ensuring the smooth flow of goods and services. 1. Rising Fuel Costs: Fuel expenses are a major pain point for transportation companies, as they significantly impact overall operational costs. Fluctuations in fuel prices, driven by geopolitical tensions and market dynamics, can strain profit margins and make it difficult for businesses to remain competitive. 2. Driver Shortages: The transportation industry is grappling with a severe driver shortage, particularly in the trucking sector. This shortage is fueled by factors such as an aging workforce, unattractive working conditions, and stringent regulations. The lack of qualified drivers is leading to delays, increased transportation costs, and disruptions to supply chains. 3. Infrastructure Deficiencies: Aging and inadequate infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and ports, poses a significant challenge to the transportation industry. Infrastructure bottlenecks and congestion lead to increased travel times, fuel consumption, and emissions, hindering efficient and cost-effective transportation. 4. Supply Chain Complexity: Modern supply chains are becoming increasingly complex, with multiple steps, intermediaries, and modes of transportation involved. This complexity makes it difficult to manage and optimize supply chains, leading to delays, inventory issues, and increased costs. 5. Technological Advancements: While technological advancements offer promising solutions to some logistical challenges, they also introduce new complexities. Integrating new technologies, such as autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence, requires significant investments, training, and regulatory oversight. Addressing the Challenges: A Path Forward

The National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy review is essential to enhancing our freight network's safety, productivity, and resilience. With unanimous support from state and territory ministers, this comprehensive strategy is set to guide government and industry actions until 2040. Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King rightly emphasises the crucial role of supply chains in our economic success and regional cohesion. This review, driven by industry input, offers a pivotal chance to recalibrate the strategy to our evolving landscape. Acknowledging the industry's resilience amid unprecedented challenges, including pandemics and climate shifts, the review will identify achievements since 2019 and address gaps. The collaborative approach includes stakeholder consultations and a round table event. We'll be keeping a close eye on the review, but in the meantime, if you need to increase your organisational productivity and would like some professional assistance, drop us a line, and let’s start the conversation on how we can help.
