Brilliant to see this new report by McKinsey Global Institute Eric Hazan, Anu Madgavkar, Michael Chui, Sven Smit, Dana Maor, Gurneet Singh Dandona, and Roland Huyghues Despointes on job transitions accelerated by #AI but also shaped by other megatrends. UK similar to other Europe: office and customer service jobs (2nd wage quintile, women) most affected. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eBRaFsfK The MGI already published a similar report on the US last year, so it's wonderful now to see the European version, to be able to compare and contrast and to dive deeper into the consequences for the UK, as well. There's a lot to absorb here, but the two most important takeaways for me so far are: 1. Job transitions are not caused just by digitisation, automation and #AI. Most of the reports out there look exclusively at generative AI, overall AI, or AI plus automation. But such partial takes can be misleading. There are many other megatrends - such as an ageing population and the need for new infrastructure - that will shape the demand for labour in years to come. Like in the US, some of the jobs most impacted by generative AI are also going to grow in demand due to those other trends. So the net effect will likely be _more_ net jobs, but at higher productivith and wages. 2. The jobs most affected are in fact not the lowest paid ones. That used to be the case for simple mechanisation, and up to a point, for the IT revolution, when e.g., jobs for switchboard operators and typists disappeared. That's because the simplest tasks to automate were also the simplest tasks to perform and required the least skill, so paid less. Now, with those jobs having been automated away, the lowest paid jobs are in fact often not "simple" but require uniquely human skills, especially navigating in a complex physical environment, for jobs like gardeners or cleaners. These are unlikely to get automated in the first waves of this next industrial revolution. Instead, the most affected jobs are in the 2nd wage quintile (low paid, but not the lowest paid). Many other messages in the report are familiar, not least the need for upskilling and reskilling, both to make the most of the new technologies to drive productivity gains (which we desperately need) but also to make sure the transition to new tasks and jobs leaves as few people behind as possible.

The Future of Jobs: Are We Ready for 2030? 🚀 Technological leaps, a shifting global economy, climate change, and demographic transformations—these forces aren’t knocking on our doors; they’re already reshaping the way we work. By 2030, 22% of current jobs will transform, with 78 million net new roles emerging. But here’s the kicker: 39% of our existing skill sets will be obsolete. Think about that. Nearly two out of five skills you rely on today might be irrelevant tomorrow. The biggest barriers? Skill gaps and outdated mindsets. Here’s what’s coming at us fast: • AI & Big Data: 86% of employers are betting big here. • Green Transition Jobs: Climate engineers, renewable energy experts—these roles aren’t futuristic; they’re foundational. • Aging Workforce: A healthcare boom is coming, but who will care for the caregivers? But amidst this transformation, the focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) has skyrocketed. From 10% two years ago to 47% of employers now recognizing diverse talent pools as essential—change is happening. Slowly, but it’s happening. Yet, not everyone is winning. For every role created, others—like bank tellers or data entry clerks—are disappearing. And with 11% of workers unlikely to receive reskilling, we risk leaving millions behind. So, the question isn’t just about the jobs of the future; it’s about who gets to have them. Will we meet this moment with innovation and inclusion, or will we let transformation create wider divides? Let’s reimagine what work could be—for everyone. What’s your take? Are we building a better future or a more fractured one? #FutureOfJobs #Reskilling #WorkforceTransformation #Inclusion #AI #GreenTransition Source: The Future of Jobs Report 2025 ID! The image features a bold headline at the top reading: "Disruption to skills" with a subheading underneath that states: "39% of workers' core skills will change by 2030." A person walking and holding a box, suggesting manual labor or logistics-related roles. The illustration emphasizes the dynamic nature of labor markets and the shift in required skillsets. It’s increasingly obvious that “there’s a global workforce challenge”. How ever, the underlying question is “What are you doing about yours?” — When work resumed this year, the first item on my discussion with my team was “upskilling and reskilling”. I asked Chukwuemeka Chukwudi and Anjola Adekunle what their 2025 professional growth goal was? We shared on why we needed to grow and how important it is for our personal lives outside working here together. — The goal is having a structured growth strategy in this season where different forms of dynamics are in play in every professional field There’s; -AI Rise -Pandemic threats -Skill Gap -Technology changes -Policy reforms -Emerging technologies -Shift in job functions -Redundant knowledge And many more global variables that is threading over 110 million jobs of actively employed people We haven’t even talked about those who are unemployed and are unskilled, lack experience, and no expertise yet There’s a huge potential corporate pandemic 😷 — Are you doing anything about this? Share with me in the comment section At Imo Varsity, we are aiming to help at least 1 million people by 2035 keep and grow in their careers I’d also love to know who’s doing something here regarding this 😁 Personally, I am starting a side project (Inegben ) to help freshers understand this issues — Dear tech bros and sis, I think it’s time for us to hep ourselves shield against these looming disasters 🧑💻
According to the World Economic Forum "advances in #AI, #robotics and energy systems – notably in renewable energy and environmental engineering – are expected to increase demand for specialist roles in these fields. Meanwhile, roles such as cashiers and administrative assistants remain among the fastest declining but are now joined by roles including graphic designers as generative AI rapidly reshapes the labour market." Our focus at Imo Varsity is "The Skill Gap". This is a major workforce challenge which will result in 120 million workers being at medium-term risk of redundancy by 2030. Once again, in detail, according to the World Economic Forum "The skills gap continues to be the most significant obstacle to business transformation in response to global macro trends, cited by 63% of employers as a main barrier to future-proofing their operations. If the global workforce were represented by a group of 100 people, 59 are projected to require reskilling or upskilling by 2030 – 11 of whom are unlikely to receive it; this translates to over 120 million workers at medium-term risk of redundancy." ----- The big question is "Where are you in the value chain?" Are you reskilling and upskilling with up-to-date and industry-standard training and courses? Or are you moving towards the part of the 120 million workers at medium-term risk of redundancy? ----- The amazing thing about this reality is that "no one is responsible for your path". You either choose "relevancy" or "redundancy". It's your choice! ----- Having seen this "workforce challenge" that lies ahead, as an employer what's your organizational choice to help upskill your team or employees this year? Is this even on your corporate agenda for the year? Don't let "Continuous learning and development" be a poaching strength for your competitors! As an employee or skilled professional, what are your plans towards upskilling or reskilling? Will AI be more relevant than you by 2030? We think you should take a hard reality self-assessment session after work to evaluate where you will likely stand by 2030 ----- Do you need help choosing a career path or choosing an upskilling or reskilling path? Feel free to reach out to us via email at info@imovarsity.com ----- Don't forget to drop your thoughts and questions about this in the comment section. We are happy to get your feedback and engage in enlightening conversations Cheers to Imo Varsity coming soon 🥂
