I have a lot of conversations about how academia and industry differ, but there is something that I view as a huge equalizer between both industries: Experimentation. Regardless of the sector in which it is conducted, experimentation, if done correctly, is not only deeply scientific but can also be one of the best ways to make fast, data-driven business decisions. By taking a few "scientific" skills and methodologies, such as crafting a clear hypothesis, defining success and failure metrics, and removing unnecessary variables, businesses of all sizes can foster innovation and informed decision-making. Embrace the process of testing and iteration—it's the pathway to meaningful progress in any business endeavor. #Experimentation #Innovation #BusinessGrowth

💡 Transforming mindsets, transforming systems. Here’s today’s powerful insight from the u-lab course by the Presencing Institute: 🙏🏻 I’m grateful it helps me turn feelings into organized thoughts. ➡️ The quality of relationships amongst stakeholders within a system—what’s called the ‘social field’—shapes the world we live in. If we want to change our reality, we need to first shift the quality of our relationships. Years of change management show that moving from a siloed mindset to a systems view improves these connections. It’s about shifting our awareness from an ego-system centric view to an eco-system system centric view. 🌱 What does it take to achieve that shift? It’s a transformational journey that requires support structures, methods, tools and spaces. One such method is #TheoryU, which through the use of its tools and practices applied to a challenge, issue or system enables profound meaningful change. ✅ That’s exactly what we offer you and your organisation (and even better cross-organisations) at Momentum Facilitation in partnership with Acacia Smith, Lettemieke Mulder & Molly Stevenson 🔍 Curious about how you can get involved? • Register for the u-lab MITx Courses : https://lnkd.in/eDwhia29 • Join us at the Inner Development Goals Summit Brussels' Watch Party on October 17: https://lnkd.in/ewCrxDQY • Schedule a discovery call: https://lnkd.in/eerqtXSY Let’s embark on this journey together and accelerate systemic shift 🌍 #sustainability #innerdevelopment #innergrowthforouterimpact #softskills #systemshift #profoundchange #momentumfacilitation

Bridging Worlds: Fostering a Synergistic Future Between Academia and Industry Through Research and Innovation The importance of research and development (R&D) cannot be overstated in the realms of academia and industry, both of which are vital for fostering innovation and securing long-term growth. Historically, institutions of higher learning served as the primary hubs for new knowledge and breakthrough innovations, largely due to their extensive resources, access to top-tier talent, and a culture deeply rooted in exploration and understanding. However, the landscape of R&D has evolved significantly, with the business sector increasingly taking the lead in driving innovation. This shift is exemplified by initiatives such as Safaricom's integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in its advertising efforts, showcasing how commercial entities are now at the forefront of applying research for immediate market impact. This transition underscores a broader change in priorities and resource allocation, propelled by the fast pace of technological advancements and the competitive nature of global markets. The business sector's focus on applied research, aimed at quick marketability and profitability, contrasts with the traditional academic emphasis on expanding human knowledge through critical analysis and problem identification. This divergence points to a fundamental difference in objectives: while academic research primarily seeks to deepen understanding and challenge existing paradigms, industry-driven R&D is solution-oriented, targeting specific problems or opportunities with a clear focus on practical applications. The discrepancy between the problem-focused approach prevalent in academia and the solution-oriented mindset in the business world raises concerns about potential underinvestment in fundamental research. Such research, although not always immediately commercially viable, is essential for groundbreaking technological and scientific advancements. Moreover, prioritising profitability in R&D may lead to a narrowed focus, possibly overlooking critical areas of research that, while not immediately lucrative, could have profound societal benefits. Bridging the gap between academia and industry through robust partnerships can enhance the application and commercialisation of foundational research, while also providing businesses access to the latest scientific developments and talent. Furthermore, cultivating an innovative culture within educational institutions that values both fundamental and applied research can help shift focus towards solving real-world problems. Government and public policy play an important role in creating a balanced R&D ecosystem that supports both fundamental research and innovation across sectors. Investments in basic research, incentives for industry-academia collaboration, and policies that foster innovation are crucial for maintaining a vibrant R&D environment. www.cbit.co.ke

#ChangeThis | In the latest addition to our ChangeThis series, Matt Beane details the dangers of letting new technologies get in the way of human mentorship and training. Other than the human cost and lost connections, there is also a shocking price tag. "In search of better results, more efficiency, and higher profits," writes Bean, "we are designing these intelligent technologies, directing them, and making choices about what research to invest in. And we’re paying a hidden, multitrillion-dollar price for it." Read "Why the Expert-Novice Bond Matters in the Age of Intelligent Technology" below, or click the link in the comments to read it on our website. Futures Researcher and Strategic Foresight Consultant at 4CF The Futures Literacy Company | Founder at the Biennale Warszawa Foundation | Art & Tech & Society Curator | Trainer | Gallup Certified Strengths Coach
Today, I’d like to introduce the #HorizonScanning #Toolbox (link in comments), which we designed and implemented with Anna Sacio-Szymańska, PhD in Management Sciences as part of the Project IDEALIST, where 4CF The Futures Literacy Company is one of the partners. This toolbox is primarily designed for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) seeking to identify emerging macro-environmental changes, comprehend their potential future impacts, and build organisational resilience and capacity today to address futures challenges. Although initially tailored for SMEs, the methods and tools we've curated are highly adaptable to various organisations and contexts. They are ideal for those aiming to: 👉 Integrate proactive reflection on change and the future into their #OrganisationalCulture 👉 Learn about #StrategicForesight methods and apply them in practice, 👉 Understand how to detect #signals of change, build sensitivity to recognize them, and distinguish valuable insights from noise. Our toolkit provides a step-by-step guide for facilitating a workshop, allowing you—regardless of the industry ecosystem you operate in—to identify and analyse #disruptors that could significantly shape your future. Inside, you will find: 👉 Comprehensive #Foresight toolbox manual, 👉 Link to Miro board with ready-to-use workshop templates, 👉 A detailed agenda for facilitators, 👉 Introduction to foresight with slides for facilitators and participants. Through our materials you will learn how to: 👉 Identify uncertainties about the future of your ecosystem, and understand what elements of your ecosystem may be most vulnerable to change (Rip van Winkle method), 👉 Collect signals from selected sources through targeted scanning, 👉 Distinguish between valuable signals and mere noise, 👉 Analyse, organise, and prioritise findings using a dedicated template, where you can evaluate signals based on potential impact and time to maturity. This process generates a matrix that helps you #ManageAttention by indicating which signals require immediate action and which can be addressed through longer-term initiatives like research or R&D, 👉 Create maps of drivers, signals and disruptors based on their estimated impact and time to maturity, 👉 Explore the possible implications of identified signals and brainstorm recommendations for decision-making. The Horizon Scanning Toolbox (link in comments) has already been successfully tested across three European industrial ecosystems: #Aerospace & #Defence, #Energy-Intensive Industries, and Mobility, Transport & Automotive (#MTA). We are eager to hear how it performs in other ecosystems. If you've worked with it, let us know—how has it been useful, and what challenges has it helped you address? Please spread the word and pass it on to anyone you think might find it useful.
