💡 GET BETTER RESULTS | Cognitive Load Theory. It may sound a bit intimidating, but actually it's a very simple idea. When we are learning, we can only take in a relatively small amount of new information. And if as course designers we overdo it, we will overwhelm our learners and they'll take in even less! In our latest blog we look at Cognitive Load Theory in more detail, but for you busy peeps we've boiled it down to six ways you can level up your course design to reduce Cognitive Load and get the best outcomes for your students. https://lnkd.in/gGwxZh3k #thursdaythoughts #coursedesign

As a full time working mum, my cognitive load is off the richter scale some weeks - as I am sure many can relate. I love this article ... and it made me think how I could use these principles in my own learning journey. Who knew our brains were like tiny lunchboxes? Learning designers use cognitive load theory to "pack" information efficiently, and I think we can totally use those same tricks in our daily lives! I've had a crack at how Cognitive Load Theory can help me as a busy working mum: 1) Reduce Extraneous Load: Silence your phone notifications! Focus on the task at hand and avoid information overload. 2) Leverage Intrinsic Load: Connect new information to what you already know. Need to learn a new marketing strategy? Think about how it relates to a campaign you already ran. 3) Promote Germane Load: Don't just passively consume information. Actively apply it! Role-play that client call or write out a practice presentation to solidify your message. This is my fave trick. 4) Minimise Multitasking: Our brains aren't great at it anyway. Focus on one task at a time for better results (and less stress!). I know we are superwomen, but who said we need to juggle 1000 things. Lets start with 2-3. Basically, we need to treat our brains like a precious lunchbox! Pack it strategically and delicately with the information you need and avoid the junk food. I am going to give some of this a go. Here's hoping I'll be amazed at how much more I can accomplish. In life, and in my own learning and growth.
