Why is it more of a struggle to do marketing for ourselves than for our clients? Last year, we spent a lot of time and brain power to figure out how we can reposition our brand without overthrowing our core identity. As a co-founder, I get absorbed into an array of roles and wear multiple hats, to the extent that I often find myself viewing our company through an outdated lens that doesn't do justice to the actual work we have put out into the world. I fell into the rabbit hole of research, followed by an internal brand audit involving layers of references. This was complemented by reflective sessions between us co-founders and then a brand exercise session involving each team member. These steps allowed us to break from a familiar lens, to unsee what we knew about our company and culture. It's through this comprehensive process that we developed today's brand narrative. Blackouts, Squeezes, Red & Yellow cards everywhere. Today was a chaotic day at world championships. 2nd dive day for men, Free Immersion (FIM). One of the more risky disciplines for squeezes. So many red cards, @matthillfreediver even made top 6 with a yellow card (hats off to him). Seeing all this wouldn’t inspire confidence for most, but risk can come with reward and I want to keep my white-card streak!! 3min to top time, snorkel in mouth, facing down in the depths, relaxing and visualising, I was cold. Waves washing over me, breeze somehow piercing my 3mm top, shivering isn’t the ideal start to a dive. I dive down to 15m and take my charge. Removing my hoods chin, as I forgot on surface. 30m, and I swallow. Not good. Lost 80% of my air store in my mouth for equalising, and too deep to safely recharge my mouthful. Looks like this dive is nearly over. So much for a new pb at 56m, but maybe I can make 40m with the little air I have left. 35m, and somehow I found some more air hidden in my mouth?? Okay, I can make 40m. 40m comes and I might be able to make 50m. I feel relaxed, and make good use of what air I have. 50m comes, and … okay I must be reverse packing. Still got air, but I’m feeling relaxed, let’s see how this goes. A few meters later, I do what I know is my last EQ. It’s time to turn, I open my eyes and I’m on the candy cane! Oh shit… I made it. Monitoring the pressure in my ears for the last 1.5m, I hit the stopper, grab the tag and rocket back up. Biggest smile on my face all the way. 🥳🥳🥳 Not the cleanest dive, but… I made it 😂. In her 2014 book, Black Faces, White Spaces: Reimagining the Relationship of African Americans to the Great Outdoors cultural geographer Carolyn Finney examines the relationship between African Americans and the environment, particularly challenging the notion of the environment and environmentalism as white spaces. Black Faces, White Spaces uses a combination of autoethnographic accounts, discourse analysis of media, interviews, and analysis of artistic forms of expression[1] to contextualize a narrative about environmental policy and race relations in the United States.[2] Finney explores the subject through the lenses of environmental history, feminist and critical race theories.[3] In her discussion of American experiences with the environment, Finney highlights how the legacy of slavery creates disparities in the impact of environmental laws such as the Wilderness Act due to factors such as racial segregation.[1] Black Faces, White Spaces challenges assumptions that the environmental movement makes about universal values, individualism, and agency, arguing that they reflect a class-based and racial power structure that denies participation from people of color.
