Many people don't think about their back health until something goes wrong. It could be persistent neck pain or a sudden twinge in the back that draws attention to the state of their spine. Ensuring your spine stays healthy is one of the most important ways to prevent health issues. Apart from the common cold, back and neck pain are the most common causes of physical discomfort in the U.S. and result in most doctor visits. Back problems are also the leading cause of disability in the U.S. The Infirmary Health Neuroscience Center of Excellence—Spine Institute is a specialized program developed to provide focused evaluation and care of spine disorders. Our team of healthcare experts is dedicated to providing precise and personalized spine care. Learn more by visiting here: https://brnw.ch/21wL5s7

🔬 Word of the Week: Apathy 🧠 Patients with neurological disorders like ALSP can exhibit a lack of interest or emotion, better known as apathy, which is indicative of their condition. It is crucial to recognize it as a manifestation of changes in the brain that dampen motivation and engagement, impacting a patient's daily functioning and relationships. During Brain Awareness Week, it cannot be stressed enough to family, friends, and loved ones of patients exhibiting apathy that their disinterest is not a choice, but a challenge to overcome that has been recognized thanks to efforts of researchers of the brain. Providing support to those who support our patients requires providing medical insight with empathy, which fosters an environment that encourages involvement and emotional connection. - #RareDisease #BrainHealth #ALSP

#breakingnews-A new study held by Scientists at Tufts University School of Medicine shows Traumatic Brain Injuries affect the entire brain, not just the injury site, altering how brain regions communicate and adapt to tasks. This insight into brain plasticity opens new avenues for targeted treatment and rehabilitation, with further research planned to explore long-term changes and intervention strategies. This study underscores the complexity of how injury affects a dynamic and always-changing brain. Most people think of the brain in one state, but their data indicates there are fluctuations, and it might offer opportunities to explore different interventions for physical therapy, speech therapy, and more. Happy MS Awareness Week! Increasing physical activity is especially important for those with MS who are experiencing a range of symptoms. There are many benefits of exercise for persons with MS including reduced spasticity, improved balance, and lessened fatigue; however, further research is needed on how physical activity is related to brain health in those with multiple sclerosis. Researchers in the ENRL are examining how markers of brain health in the blood are related to physical activity levels, vascular health, and cognitive function in those with and without MS. If you are interested in learning more, contact (312) 355-0383 or ENRL@uic.edu about the PASN-MS study. #multiplesclerosis #msawareness #msresearch #msawarenessweek #msawarenessmonth

Ensuring Accurate Assessment in Brain Injury Following initial trauma assessments, conducting a comprehensive neurological exam is imperative. Understanding the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is crucial for guiding management decisions based on current guidelines. For non-intubated patients, meticulously evaluate pupil size, motor strength, and sensation post-GCS scoring to assess neurological function. Intubated patients require prompt GCS establishment and assessment of pupil reactivity, symmetry, and reflexes, despite potential sedation effects. Consideration of pharmacological influences such as sedatives and intoxicants is vital as they can affect examination outcomes. Ensuring accurate assessment post-airway, breathing, and circulation stabilization is paramount for optimizing patient care. How could assess your risk of developing dementia or having a stroke as you age? A new tool developed by a Massachusetts General Hospital study named the Brain Care Score, or BCS, may help you gain this insight. This evaluation and conclusions drawn from it must be reviewed by a trained clinician. The authors cited “the global brain health crisis” as one of the motivators for their work; in the U.S. alone, 1 in 7 people have dementia, and every four minutes someone dies from a stroke, according to the study.
