Together, to think big: Milan trade fairs present themselves MICAM Milano, MIPEL , TheOneMilano, Milano Fashion&Jewels, #Lineapelle and, with a “promotional” format, Simac Tanning Tech. Together, to think big, the upcoming fashion fairs in Milan, scheduled from 18 to 22 February, were presented at the Confindustria Moda - Federazione Italiana Tessile, Moda e Accessorio headquarters in Milan. Together, to think big Let’s start with the concept behind the presentation: the desire to share “an idea of greatness”. Milan fashion fairs have launched their next editions under the hashtag #greatify. A neologism that contains “the concept of ‘doing’ or ‘becoming’”, reads a note, “because that is precisely what fairs are: the place of excellence for opening up new #markets, developing #business and above all representing #trends, those of the market to come”. “Almost 3,000 brands/exhibitors will be the protagonists at Fiera Milano SpA Rho from 18 to 22 February”. Micam, Mipel, TheOne and Fashion&Jewels will start first, on Sunday 18 February, and will coincide in their last two days with Lineapelle (20-22 February), within which there will be a promotional area for Simac Tanning Tech, the annual exhibition of technology for the supply chain, that will hold its 50th edition in September 2024. “It is precisely on the values of #innovation and #excellence that the #synergy between the trade fairs of the #fashion world is founded and goes on; fairs that, for this February edition as well, will unite their synergies and present themselves to the market all #together”. Declining a synergetic idea of greatness To decline this synergetic idea of grandeur, Milan fashion fairs will stage from 18 to 22 February not only a union of trade fairs specialising in B2B #networking. They will give life to real events full of content and projects. There will be, for example, Micam’s great focus on training and the need to find attractive solutions to attract young people to the factory, as Giovanna Ceolini (President of Assocalzaturifici) explained. There will be the new development horizon of Lineapelle, related to interior design.“We have found this need through the trade fairs of our international network”, says Fulvia Bacchi, CEO of Lineapelle, “such as London and, in particular, New York, where we have activated a collaboration with the US association of #architects. This is why we have created at Lineapelle a space for interior design in our Trend Area, creating a stimulating installation involving five pairs of companies”. Otherwise, there will be Mipel, which is firmly focusing on the travel & business dimension. What to ask from politics Together, the trade fairs and their sectors go beyond the #exhibition aspect to launch requests for support to Italian and EU politics. The Jewellery and Gem Asia show in Hong Kong that ended on Sunday provided a lot of food for thought and I couldn’t help but question whether the show calendar in Hong Kong was maybe overcrowded. Consider that we have four major jewellery trade fairs in the city each year… in March, June, September, and November. Are buyers and exhibitors motivated to attend all four? The light visitor traffic we saw last week suggested that they aren’t, especially during a challenging market environment. Admittedly, the June and November shows have always been the smaller of the events, and not a great barometer for the other two which are better positioned in terms of timing. September gives retailers an opportunity to source goods ahead of the Christmas and Chinese New Year seasons, while they can replace inventory they have sold during those festivals at the March show. Last week, I suggested that the success of the show would depend on the attendance of buyers from mainland China. In truth, visitor traffic was light across the board, and the slowdown in China no doubt contributed to that. Despite the lack of buzz, I had some important meetings and discussions with clients and suppliers who were in town. I left encouraged by prospects for the region, particularly Southeast Asia where you all know I have been operating for many years. The tremendous potential I see there partially compensates for the weak short-term outlook for China. Either way, I wouldn’t read too much into the slow traffic and activity experienced last week.
