There is NO "Get out of Jail Free" card for Aviation - Except travelling LESS! Crossing the Atlantic in * ECONOMY Class equals 4 WEEKS of emissions from a typical European household. * BUSINESS Class takes this up to 12 WEEKS. * FIRST Class pushes this to 38 WEEKS. * A PRIVATE JET seat equals an incredible 6 YEARS of emissions from an average European household (25 metric tons of CO2)! That's 80 ECONOMY Class passengers. When was the last time you purchased a CARBON OFFSET voucher for your INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT? Did you read the fine print? At BA for example the MAXIMUM OFFSET amount their booking system offers is ONLY 15%. They do not even give you the option to offset 100% of emissions! Presumably because if they made the full environmental and social cost transparent many people would RECONSIDER their travel plans. Something Airlines clearly do not want even though this would in many cases be the ONLY ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSIBLE thing to do. https://lnkd.in/eyEm8j7A https://lnkd.in/ePzbuPni https://lnkd.in/eaW_SXFP https://lnkd.in/eCNmKNgy #sustainability #aviation #carbonoffsets #flyingless

Hey Bristol Airport, what would you do with an extra 1.2m passengers per annum? At EA Maven we have completed our Regional Air Mobility Index of the number of routes that are potentially viable and there are 35 of them. These passengers would save a staggering 2.2m hours a year which would contribute £23m in increased productivity for the airport and its catchment area. Another £23m would be spread across the destination airports bringing the total economic uplift (in terms of the value of time saved) to £46.8m. The challenge could be that 90% of those travellers use cars to get to those destinations so you may want to consider the impact on your surface access strategy. #DistributedAviation #ElectricAviation #ElectricAircraft #RAM #RegionalAirMobility Andrew Goodenough Rob O'Dare
At EA Maven we have completed our Regional Air Mobility Index for Bristol Airport and the findings are very positive. 35 - Potential routes 37.7m travellers - Target Market 1.2m - Passengers converted from other modes of transport 250 years – Time saved by travellers over other modes of transport on an annual basis. £23.4m - Economic stimulation to the airport catchment area in terms of the value of time saved by travellers

The Concorde could fly London to New York in ~3.5 hours (half the time of a normal airliner). It had great tech but awful business model. In operation from 1976 to 2003, the plane was a technical marvel and faster than the speed of sound. Here are some insane specs: -- Got as high as 10k miles -- Flew around earth in 30 hours -- Mach 2.04 speed (more than 2x speed of sound) -- Arrived in New York at earlier time than it left London (banker folk loved this) -- Delta wings and nose tip that could point down (so pilots could see runway, because it had to land at specific angle) Jointly run by British Airways and Air France, there were only 14 Concordes put to work (flew 50,000 total flights). What was wrong with the business model? -- SMALL MARKET: The thin aerodynamic design could only seat 109, so tickets were very expensive: $11k (a Boeing 747 can do >500 passengers) -- HUGE MAINTENANCE: Planes got so hot at the max height (110 degrees), that they expanded 30cm and sealant for fuel hardened. It took 28 hours to turnaround the plane (a normal one can do <2 hours). -- OUTRAGEOUS FUEL NEEDS: Each flight required 28,000 litres per hour in the air, for max 109 passengers. Commmercial planes needed 4x less fuel on a per passenger basis. -- NOISE RESTRICTIONS: Many cities wouldn’t allow the Concorde to fly because of how glass-shatteringly long it is on take-off, which limited destinations. *** Development of the Concorde — it had an “e” to placate the French — cost $2.8B and was paid for by the UK and French governments. The airlines were actually able to fly profitably for a number of years. But the economics were warped because the planes were given to them for free and the airlines didn’t have to capitalize costs. The business ultimately shuttered in 2003 following a tragic crash in 2000 and industry-wide slowdown post-9/11. Will we ever have sub-4 hour flights from London to NY again? A batch of sonic plane startups could make it happen by the end of this decade.

🛬 Recognizing the Overlooked Stability at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) 🌟 Recently, a video of a challenging plane landing amidst a storm made me reflect on the often overlooked environmental stability at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). In contrast to many airports battling adverse weather, ATL is a haven of calm and operational reliability. 🌍 Strategically Positioned: ATL isn’t just about seamless landings. Its strategic position allows for flights to reach 80% of the U.S. within just two hours. This capability, along with its environmental stability, highlights ATL’s critical role in national and global air travel. 🔍 Efficiency in Quietude: The unnoticed efficiency and reliability of ATL are vital. This airport exemplifies careful planning and a dedication to excellence, assuring safety and speed in our travel experiences. Let’s take a moment to value the stable and efficient gateway ATL provides, a stark contrast to the turbulent scenarios seen at other airports.

So climate activists now take aim at the use of long-established airfields by private sector users? Airfields like Farnborough have served military and private jet aircraft for decades, non-jet aircraft for almost a century! Is their concern that increased aircraft movements, including private jets, may contribute to both noise and climate effects on those who have chosen to live near a long-established airfield? Or is it purely a means to push for the closure or reduced activity at an airfield now surrounded by residential users who actually chose to live in that environment? Next they’ll be demonstrating about new or upgraded road construction aimed at reducing trafic congestion- another blight on the real need to address climate change constructively, and with a true sense of urgency. I detect a smidgeon of hypocrisy when pilots fall for this kind of misguided rhetoric!
