It is good to hear about the many EV projects countrywide that bring us closer to the Government’s net zero goals. While the shift to EVs is commendable, the 50% surge in grid demand is cause for concern. As of August last year, EVs make up 20% of car sales, highlighting the urgency for strategic investments in grid modernisation. Electric Vehicle adoption is happening and although in recent months there's been a bit of apprehension reflected in new EV car sales the transition will continue. Many utilities around the world will need to plan for that change so understanding the location of EV adoption will influence the priority of infrastructure upgrade decisions and how electricity will be consumed or shared back to the grid. “A lot of the analysis that went into that request came from, like, 2019 or 2020 forecasts, in particular some of those older EV forecasts that didn’t anticipate some of the growth that we believe we’re more likely to see now,” Krefta said. This situation has PG&E applying for numerous state and federal grants that could help it meet its electrification targets. “I think right now people have an overly simplistic view of what electrification of transportation means,” said Kevala CEO Aram Shumavon. “If done right, it will be phenomenal; if mismanaged, there are going to be a lot of upset people, and that is a real risk. That’s a risk for regulators. That’s a risk for politicians, and that’s a risk for utilities.” #locationintelligence #gridinnovation #EVadoption

Armando LaCivita's post provokes some interesting thoughts. Apparently I have more of them than LinkedIn allows in a comment, so here goes.. I'd argue there's an even bigger role for GIS in this solution. While locating clusters of EV usage is certainly useful, there's also a huge reliance on network intelligence in those areas to help reduce these burdens at a local level. I believe this article, like the majority of publications who glance at the topic, put too great of an emphasis on transmission infrastructure to solve the problem. Yes, the country is in need of transmission investment. No, it won't solve the issue before it becomes a crisis. And transporting these significant volumes of renewable energy assumes we just have large scale wind and solar sites waiting to send power to your EV. So many people overlook the fact that these local issues (like EV concentrations taxing distribution infrastructure) can be solved at a local level - with solutions like residential and community battery storage. This article mentions it briefly, but fails to articulate the utility of this solution. Fortunately, most utilities are starting to realize this - because they also understand it takes years just to get permits for new transmission lines. Which brings me back to my opening point. Understanding where these large, burdensome loads are on the system is a big part of identifying where there may be a problem. But clusters of EV infrastructure are only a problem if they exceed the capacity of some grid infrastructure on the way to those load sites (creating a "constraint" - essentially a weak link in the grid). Once you identify these load areas, the immediate next step is to understand what constraints exist in the network. Now a utility has a choice whether to alleviate that constraint by upgrading that piece of infrastructure, or to mitigate it by strategically locating new equipment, such as grid scale battery storage. Or even incentivizing customers to deploy their own battery storage! Location AND network intelligence are both central answering these questions. We can do a lot more than sit and wait for generational investments in transmission lines...
