As #EV adoption continues to grow, so do concerns about the electric grid’s ability to handle these vehicles’ charging needs. Many stakeholders are worried that there’s not enough time to prepare the electric grid for new power demand, given that installations and upgrades can take years. Thankfully, RMI research shows that there are many steps regulators and utilities can take to expedite grid improvements. Our new report provides stakeholders a set of foundational building blocks that collectively create a strong foundation for utility planning around EVs, while protecting utility customers from excess costs. #transportation #climate #EVcharging #transportationElectrification #electricTrucks #chargingInfrastructure #cityPlanning https://bit.ly/3C0HKSZ

Accelerating a clean, equitable transition to electric transportation
About us
Transportation is vital to every aspect of our lives, connecting people, generating economic opportunity, and providing access to critical goods. It also contributes more climate-warming emissions and air pollution in the U.S. than any other sector, disproportionately impacting the world’s most underserved and vulnerable populations. Electrifying transportation is critical to halt this growth in air pollution, emissions-related illness, and death — and to avoid catastrophic climate change. RMI’s Carbon-Free Transportation team works to accelerate the pace and scale of vehicle electrification in the United States, India, China, and other locations.

A circular battery economy – one in which end-of-life batteries are reused, repurposed, or recycled – can lessen the US’ dependence on newly mined minerals and the harms associated with their extraction, decrease emissions from battery production, and help meet increasing demand for EVs. But what is it? We explain in easy-to-understand terms here: #climate #transportation #EVs #ElectricVehicles #EVbatteries #batterycircularity

#Transportation electrification efforts have largely focused on replacing gas-powered cars with electric vehicles, which makes sense given US’ car-centric culture. Less attention has been paid to e-bikes, a much more affordable and accessible alternative. But that’s changing. Programs such as Denver’s wildly popular e-bike incentive program are showing that policy can be a powerful lever to accelerate e-bike adoption, for instance. To help policymakers, city planners, and others understand the financial, social, environmental, and health benefits of e-bike adoption, RMI created its E-Bike Environment and Economics Impact Assessment Calculator for Cities. #ebikes #electricvehicles #EVs #cityplanning #climate

Electrifying these trucks would improve local health and reduce climate impacts. However, providing sufficient charging infrastructure in the right locations is challenging. That’s why RMI analyzed drayage trucking data in Los Angeles County: to provide stakeholders with a clear understanding of where trucks typically go before and after passing through the Port of LA. The biggest takeaway? Creating well-located charging locations will result in faster deployment and lower grid costs, while accelerating truck, transit, school bus, and car electrification. #EV charging stations are by and large located in affluent areas where EV adoption is already high. Given that 40 percent of Americans in the largest US cities live in multifamily housing, state and local governments need to prioritize increasing access to EV chargers and shared mobility options like carshares, electric scooters, and bikes. RMI talked to residents of lower-income multifamily housing communities in Portland, Oregon; Atlanta, Georgia; and Phoenix, Arizona to learn about their nuanced transportation needs and to propose solutions. They also talked to city partners, EV equity advocacy groups, car rental organizations, micromobility companies, charging equipment providers, and those involved in building management. See their insights in the report below! #climate #transportation #cityplanning #ElectricVehicles #EVs #multifamilyhousing

The massive, global on-demand last-mile delivery services market, which includes companies such as Uber Eats, Door Dash, JustEat, and Deliveroo, heavily relies on the use of gas-powered vehicles. Replacing these vehicles with EVs will significantly decrease the emissions they produce. How can stakeholders advance this transition? To answer this question, RMI talked to couriers, city officials, and community-based organizations in London, Mexico City, and Seattle to understand the barriers to EV adoption in this sector. It can be difficult to find easy-to-understand resources regarding the many electric vehicle (EV) policies and regulations. To save decision makers time, we’ve compiled a series of factsheets that clearly and thoroughly outline the regulations that exist, their goals, who must comply, and what is required for compliance in this article from RMI's Marie McNamara: #climate #transportation #ElectricVehicles #EVs

A circular battery economy, one in which end-of-life batteries are reused, repurposed, or recycled, can help meet projected mineral supply gaps as a result of increasing demand for EVs while also reducing the supply chain’s reliance on the social and environmental harms associated with mineral extraction. Learn why investment is critical to making a circular economy a reality in this article from RMI's Monkgogi Buzwani. #climate #transportation #EVs #ElectricVehicles #EVbatteries #batterycircularity

"Achieving a 60% rate of adoption for electric two-wheelers in 16 years’ time is ambitious. However, electric motorcycles are rapidly gaining traction in other emerging market countries like Kenya and Rwanda, where electric two-wheelers are already becoming widespread among commercial users. But an #EV boom in #Nigeria is not going to happen unless the right policies are in place, and unless EV financing is de-risked." -- Kelly Carlin, RMI Read more about Nigeria's efforts to decarbonize its #transportation sector in this article from African Business Magazine's Ben Payton.
