What does having a job mean to you? For Smart Works clients, having a job provides a sense of purpose and identity. I imagine it’s the same for most of us. I know I wouldn’t be me without my work. The Smart Works Charity Unemployment Index launches this morning. It’s the second year of the index and an important one for us in Newcastle, as we have data that specifically relates to the North East. Reading our data is sobering: 34% of our clients are solo parents (the national average is 23% according to Gingerbread). Our average client age is 38. 16% identified as having a disability. Our clients applied for an average of 33 jobs without finding work, and 40% had been out of work for over a year. So, when people ask how I find time to commit to chairing this awesome charity, the answer is this: 67% of clients supported by our centre in Newcastle went on to secure a job within a month of their first Smart Works appointment. 67%! How bloody epic is that?? Helping women secure work and changing their lives for the better motivates me like nothing else and inspires me to keep doing my best. That’s why I love volunteering with Smart Works Newcastle so much! I know how lost I felt in the days/weeks/months immediately after being made redundant. My job defined me and my work still does so I totally get this Sophie Milliken MBE ! Britt Humphrey Anna Holderness This is the charity we supported and for who we have the clothing collections for at the Newcastle office. Maybe it’s something Leeds could do too Anna as there is a centre there also.
Big Well Done Sophie & your work colleagues on the amazing work you’re doing to help women within the North East back into work. Great photo 😊
Incredible charity - have admired from afar for years 🙌
Incredible charity and lovely team, amazing work that is life changing for the women and enables them to be such a positive role model for their children too 💙

9moIt's such an amazing charity. Accessing my right to earn was a monumental challenge, the rejection was soul destroying, but so so unkind. I wasn't talentless, without skill, unable to put in hard graft (quite the opposite) but my body wasn't blessed with good health, there's a layer of cruelty behind the decision to reject someone because they have an additional need (which would actually be less impactful then those with full health, as our community is so resilient and stubborn). Smartworks is a lifesaver; lack of work, lack of purpose, impacts self-worth and mental health, it leads to a dark place. 💛
