As educators, we know that fostering emotional intelligence in our students is just as important as their academic learning. That's why we're excited to introduce our Positive Self-Talk Colouring Activity – a fun and engaging way to help kids develop resilience and self-esteem through positive affirmations. Why Positive Self-Talk? 🌟 Because it’s a powerful tool that can help learners navigate their emotions, overcome challenges, and build a strong sense of self-worth. Use them as a collective activity or keep them on hand if your learners are having a difficult day; it’s entirely up to you. 🔗 Download this free printable by following the link: https://bit.ly/3xU0H7Z

David Adams shared an inspiring speech during the RULER conference called 'An Emotional Education for National Well-Being'. I thought that it was a great reminder when he said that education is about understanding ourselves and the world around us. Embracing our emotions and cognitions helps us navigate the world with clarity and problem-solving abilities. Emotional education is crucial for regulating emotions and enhancing interactions. Social-emotional learning (SEL) builds vital skills like self-regulation and collaboration, supporting students to become better learners and future leaders. Teachers skilled in SEL can connect with students, adapt lessons, and organize classrooms effectively. Prioritizing emotional education paves the way for resilient, empathetic learners prepared for success in and out of the classroom. As leaders and educators, we have to make space in our busy schedules for emotional education to support our students and everyone we work with.

Why Do We Expect Emotional Skills to Just Happen? A Lesson in Nurturing Self-Regulation" We wouldn’t expect a child to master basic math or reading without instruction, so why do we assume they’ll naturally develop self-regulation, impulse control, and empathy? Just as children need guidance to understand 2+2 or spell "apple," they require our support to learn how to pause, make thoughtful decisions, and connect with others emotionally. Let's rethink our approach: nurturing these crucial skills takes deliberate teaching and consistent modeling. Investing in their emotional education is just as vital as their academic learning. 🌟📚💬

What Motivates Us? Back in the 1940's Harry F. Harlow, a professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin established a laboratory for examining primate behaviour. At that time there were believed to be only two main drives for behaviour: 1) biological drive (eg drinking to quench thirst) and 2) rewards and punishments - external factors. In preparation for one of his experiments he placed a mechanical puzzle in the cages to prepare them for tests in a couple of week's time. Unexpectedly the monkeys approached the puzzles with great focus, playing with them and figuring out how they worked. After much head-scratching Harlow concluded "The performance of the task provided intrinsic reward." This was the first seedling of the idea of 'intrinsic motivation' in the field of psychology. Some may resonate with the word 'flow', where an activity becomes so engaging and rewarding, that it would be continued without reward. Daniel H. Pink's book, Drive, covers this subject in fascinating detail. What tasks do you do that you are intrinsically motivated to do? https://lnkd.in/eZGd8J9K #selfdirectededucation #learning #microschool #progressiveeducation #intrinsicmotivation #drive

Did you know that when our stress response is activated it takes at least 20 minutes to be able to re-engage in learning? If we truly understood this, as adults, as parents, as educators, we would have a complete paradigm shift in how we respond to behaviors. I facilitate a transformational workshop on how to reframe student behaviors through a nervous system lens so we can build a solid foundation for academic success. Reach out to have me visit your site and deliver this potent workshop to educators, parents and students! When we work together, we go further! 💛 Lili

I’ve seen firsthand how lack of play can impact a child’s cognitive and emotional development. Play is not just a fun activity—it’s critical for emotional regulation and building confidence. When children are deprived of that interactive learning, it reflects in their inability to fully engage in academic settings. You cannot expect a child to embrace new concepts without giving them the chance to fully explore and practice. When children realize that the only thing standing between them and mastery is their own understanding, it ignites a deeper, internal motivation—a drive to learn that no external force can instill.
