The Suez Canal got significant media attention in 2021, when the Evergiven, a big container ship, got stuck in the middle of the canal, jeopardising world´s trade for several weeks. Something that does not get much attention is the fact that the southern entrance of the canal is one of the world´s marine pollution hotspots, as a consequence of ships discharging oily waste before entering the Mediterranean, where aerial and satellite surveillance prevents this kind of behaviour. Who should pay for the environmental and economic damage that this practice entails? #marinepollution #oilspills #maritime #earthobservation

What does the Panama Canal's increase in booking slots for Panamax locks mean for future shipping operations? The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is increasing booking slots for Panamax locks in response to current and estimated water levels in Gatun Lake, following a period of waterway capacity regulation due to a massive drought in 2023. The ACP plans to gradually increase daily transits and maximum authorized draft for vessels sailing in the Panama Canal, with hopes of normalizing operations by next year, contingent on the forecasted rainy season and the shift to La Nina. The ACP is addressing water issues through the development of a water management system, exploring solutions outside the canal watershed, and implementing water-saving tactics and short-term plans to optimize water use. 📌 𝗝𝗕𝗙 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 - 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 Hugo Perez, PMP It is promising to see steps being taken to gradually ease restrictions in the Panama Canal, but what's most important is to observe actions aimed at ensuring its continued operations in the future. As the contaminated area grows and the number of oil spills increases, the disaster is likely to expand further. For example, toxic compounds such as benzene and toluene contained in crude oil can enter the food chain, from lower algae to higher mammals and humans, all of which are immune to poisoning through the food chain. And the species that survive may also have genetic mutations in the future that will be passed on to countless offspring. Recommend Oilock's oil absorbing particle, use cutting-edge gas-phase modification technology. This unique process ensures high absorption capacity, even at temperatures up to 1000°C, while being non-toxic and odorless. Our products can absorb over 50 types of oils, as well as various heavy metals and non-polar liquids.
