Everyone needs reliable transportation—but transportation remains a challenge for older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers. Through our Master Plan for Aging for the Inland Empire, we’re working to find solutions—including improved public transportation, medical transportation, and help for Alzheimer’s patients who can no longer drive. Specific recommendations include: > Research which senior centers do not currently have a bus and connect them with funding resources. > Encourage health care facilities to promote and advertise public transportation alternatives for older and disabled adults. > Advocate for free or subsidized rides for older adults and adults with disabilities on public transit. Want to learn more about our recommendations to help the aging and disabled in the Inland Empire community? We are all together in care, bound by shared responsibility and collective need. Direct care workers and family caregivers are essential partners in providing care and support for millions of older adults and people with disabilities. They hold the key to bringing an effective system of person and family-centered care and support to reality. Share this post to help us spread the word about the vital role of all caregivers. Six years ago, I became a family caregiver for my parents, who were struggling to age in place. It was a job I didn't apply for, one without a job description or training. All I knew was it included all things legal, financial, medical, and housing. The role rapidly infiltrated all areas of my life and had no boundaries. Gaps in the care infrastructure were often time-sensitive and required travel and PTO to resolve. Emergencies and respite care became the norm, keeping me up at night and robbing me of my ability to focus and continue to be a top performer in the workplace. A situation that could not be resolved through a 12-week unpaid Family Medical Leave request. While this role is a privilege, it brings into our lives an overwhelming financial, social, and emotional toll. It's a time when most of us daydream of taking on more in our careers, free from the demands of parenting, and fulfilling our bucket lists with the time freedom we achieve as we reach our mid-40s. Take the time to read the study highlighted in this original post. It contains invaluable information. As I reemerge from my full-time caregiver journey, I can't help but share the 10 Things I Wish I had known: 🗝 6 in 10 workers serve as family caregivers caring for a loved one with a mental, cognitive, chronic health, or mobility condition 🗝 The average family caregiver is 49 and provides 20+ hours of care 🗝 Women support ~80% of the care gaps 🗝 29% of these women, 45+, eventually depart the workforce to provide care 🗝 Don't underestimate the valuable caregiver advocacy skills have; you don't need to be a medical professional to become a caregiver 🗝 65% of older adults rely on families for care 🗝 Extended family supplements 30% of care costs 🗝 Dementia "memory care" is not covered by Medicare; private pay = $~150K annually the average stay is 3.5 years 🗝 Grief becomes a reality once parent-child roles reverse 🗝🗝If a member of the care team is no longer available have a backup or your plan will fall apart! The reality is it's only a matter of time before this issue touches your world! Rosalynn Carter said it best: "There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers." Remember: Knowledge is power. Stay informed. If you've already been impacted, do your part in advocating for family caregivers. They are the backbone of today's eldercare system!

#covid19 The COVID-19 pandemic left many persons with disabilities and older adults without reliable transportation to access essential goods, medical care, and social engagements. Issues of social isolation for older adults were exacerbated with the emergence of COVID-19 because transportation service was reduced. TCRP Research Report 243: Transportation for People with Disabilities and Older Adults During COVID-19: Lessons for Emergency Response, a pre-publication report from TRB's Transit Cooperative Research Program, aims to provide transportation organizations (including transit agencies, specialized transportation providers, and other local government agencies and stakeholders) with helpful information and strategies on providing service for persons with disabilities and older adults in emergency situations. It is available for free as a download. https://lnkd.in/eyCvZV_V
