What is plastic pollution and why does it matter? 🤔 Plastic pollution is more than the single use packaging that is touted as the villain of all plastics. 👺 When ANY plastic isn’t recycled or disposed of correctly it can end up harming animal and marine life, amassing in our oceans and breaking down into micro-plastics that stay in the ecosystem.👎 Since its creation in 2011, Plastic Free July has raised awareness about the plastic pollution crisis and has seen an average reduction of 18kg of waste and recycling per person. Plastic Free July shows the true power of community action! 💪  Launched in 2011, the Plastic Free July campaign has achieved some incredible impact: ✨ 89 million people participated globally in 2023 ✨ 87% of participants made at least one lasting change ✨ Participants reduced their households’ non-recoverable waste by 900 million kg in 2023 ✨ Participants reduced their households’ plastic consumption by 240 million kg in 2023 In addition, over the last 5 years, participants have avoided 10 billion kilograms of waste. Our oceans have become a significant dumping ground for plastic waste. An estimated 8 to 11 million metric tonnes of plastic enter the oceans every year. This plastic eventually breaks down into microplastics, which fish often mistake for food. A review study (from March 2019 to March 2020) stated that a median of 60% of fish—belonging to 198 species captured in 24 countries—contained microplastics in their organs. As we consume these fish, the microplastics can enter our bodies, presenting potential health risks. Let's take responsibility for how we dispose of our plastic waste.
