Amazon and the Italian state railways Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) have joined forces to launch a new rail service for transporting e-commerce goods between distribution centres in Italy and Germany. This initiative aims to reduce dependence on international road haulage and its associated environmental impact. The rail service will initially operate on two routes: Duisburg, Germany to Pomezia, Italy, and Herne, Germany to Verona, Italy. FS subsidiary, Mercitalia Intermodal, will be responsible for handling three trains per week on the former route, while TX Logistik, another FS company, will manage six trains each week on the latter. According to FS, this shift to intermodal transport has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 9,000 tonnes annually compared to traditional road freight. Lorenzo Barbo, CEO of Amazon Italia Logistics, commented on the collaboration, saying that “Italy’s geography and strong Alpine connections position it as a key player in unlocking the benefits of a growing intermodal rail sector. Expanding our collaboration with Mercitalia allows us to further develop sustainable logistics practices and increase rail freight between our European sites.” Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics, also expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership by stating that “Rail connections to and from Germany are part of our strategic plan, aligned with the European Union’s target of 30% of goods being transported by rail by 2030.” #ecommerce #amazon #collaboration #partnership #logistics #delivery #transportation #supplychain #italy #germany

The largest courier companies in the world The continued rise of e-commerce has led to increased demand for courier services worldwide. As more consumers shop online, courier companies must expand their infrastructure and capabilities to meet growing delivery volumes. The “big three” couriers of United Parcel Service (UPS), FedEx, and DHL continue to dominate courier services worldwide. Other carriers that operate more regionally have still attained a lot of value, including Japan Post Holdings and China’s S.F. Express and ZTO Express. Of course, there have been many hurdles for the courier industry to overcome in the past few years. Global supply chain disruptions, such as those caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters, or geopolitical tensions, can severely impact courier operations. Any delays at cargo-shipping hubs, changes in trade routes, and supply shortages may affect the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of courier services. But though courier services have already improved in both speed and availability in many countries, companies are still looking for ways to increase efficiency even further. FedEx, for example, has started experimenting with AI-powered sorting robots to improve efficiency downstream. #gpi #economy #finance #invest #investment #money

The e-commerce market continues to drive demand, with leading e-commerce companies signing peak season charter agreements with commercial airlines. "This has further reduced the availability of commercial flight capacity, particularly on routes from China to the U.S.," says the latest update from Dimerco Express Group. Kathy Liu, VP, Global Sales & Marketing, Dimerco Express Group says: "As more production of finished goods has relocated from China to Southeast Asia since 2022, additional capacity is required to transport these products to the U.S. and Europe. This has placed significant pressure on freighter services in key transit hubs like Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Hong Kong, impacting outbound capacity from these locations as well. With the peak season approaching rapidly, shippers are advised to plan their capacity needs at least two weeks in advance, especially for time sensitive shipments." Nine months ago, Xeneta’s chief air freight officer Niall van de Wouw had never heard of Temu. Fast forward to today and the likes of Temu and Shein have become so popular that they've caused prices for fast shipping by airplane from China to spike, creating a cargo crunch that’s altering global trade routes for an air freight industry scrambling to keep up. “Nobody saw it coming” van de Wouw, tells Forbes. “Their volumes could be the same order of magnitude as the largest freight forwarder in the world. "I cannot recall one or two companies producing so much demand. That’s the scary bit about exponential growth.” Read the full article to gain additional insights from van de Wouw and Wenwen Zhang here: https://lnkd.in/eSPDSh8n #aircargo #airfreight #forbes #supplychain
