Hello prospectors & developers, Motherlode Consulting Inc. would like to bring you our 11th post of world-class mineral districts! Our 11th post focuses on #REE in #Brazil, which has drawn the attention of 8 exploration & developing companies. Brazil ranks Top 25 of the world for its Investment Attractiveness measured in The Fraser Institute Annual Survey of Mining Companies 2022. Rare earth elements (REE) mineralization is primarily hosted in #carbonatites, which are igneous rocks formed in the crust by fractional crystallization of carbonate-rich melts derived from the mantle. Other occurrences include REE-rich laterites formed by weathering of carbonatites and/or granitic rocks. Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 17 chemical elements, which are categorized into two main groups based on their atomic number and mass: Light rare earth elements (LREEs) of atomic numbers ranging from 57 to 64, including lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), and neodymium (Nd). Heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) of atomic numbers ranging from 65 to 71, including gadolinium (Gd), terbium (Tb), dysprosium (Dy), and yttrium (Y). There are 9 known projects in Brazil, concentrated in two states, #MinasGerais to the south and #Goias and #Tocantins states to the center of the country. The average resource size for a project being 339 Mt @ 1.9% TREO. The image below shows the number of REE projects in Brazil distributed through the Lassonde Curve, where only the Serra Verde project is a pure REE producing operation also being the largest REE resource in Brazil at 911Mt @ 0.12 % TREO. Itafos PEA-stage Araxa Project (28 Mt @ 4.2% TREO) along with Meteoric Resources 's Caldeira project (409 Mt @ 0.26% TREO) and INB (Industria Nucleares do Brasil) Pocos Caldas project (6 Mt @ 3% TREO) are the only projects with defined resources. The remaining companies are all in exploration stage and include Canada Rare Earth Corporation., Alvo Minerals Ltd and Appia Rare Earths & Uranium Corp. Exploration in NSW has been largely dominated by a focus on porphyry systems and is known for hosting Australia’s largest porphyry deposit at Cadia (50Moz Au, 9Mt Cu). While host to some large epithermal deposits, including Cowal (15Moz) and Bowden’s (400Moz), there has been comparatively little exploration for low sulphidation epithermal systems in the Lachlan Orogen. Actively reviving exploration for these systems, Legacy Minerals (ASX: LGM) Minerals controls three major projects, Black Range, Bauloora (under a 2023 JV with Newmont Corporation) and Drake located in the New England Orogen. Black Range and Bauloora are Devonian/Silurian (Palaeozoic) aged systems and have been largely overlooked because they are the ‘wrong aged rocks’ further complicated by overprinting mineralisation. Normally found in later geological settings, like PNG, Japan, and South America, there was a perception that preservation of an economic deposit was unlikely. However, the petrographic study of sinter lithology by Legacy Minerals for the first time on both projects was a technical breakthrough, confirming preservation and recognition of some of the world’s oldest preserved sinter related lithologies. While Bauloora and Black Range are relatively early in their exploration lifecycle, Drake is a more advanced, Permian aged system with similarities to other Pacific Rim carbonate base metal deposits. Legacy Minerals is aiming to reset the exploration narrative, rethinking the targeting and deploying a large scale and systematic approach that moves away from viewing it through a mining focused project development lens. This weeks talk with Christopher Byrne presents the system models used for mineralisation at the Bauloora Project, Black Range, and Drake. It will also provide an overview on how the Legacy Minerals exploration approach to a broad, systematic model drivel exploration program, has resulted in some significant technical breakthroughs across the projects.
