A recent Wall Street Journal article highlights the downstream impact of ongoing #hotel staffing shortages, despite significant wage increases. These shortages are adversely affecting guest experience and loyalty. I wrote about this over a year ago, offering strategies for hoteliers to optimize operations and workforce without sacrificing service. However, the issue is larger than this. The hotel industry needs to do a better job educating young people as to why working in #hospitality can lead to a great career. Here are a few of my thoughts: 🤖 Future Proofed: Although AI-driven automation threatens many industries, hospitality remains relatively insulated. Industry research and opinion suggest that the majority of guests prefer human interaction, underscoring the continued need for human staff as long as travel (outside the metaverse) exists. 🏨 “Small” Business Ownership: the general public tends to think that the big brands own all the hotels. While an increasing percentage of hotels & resorts are owned by REITs today, a huge number are still owned by families or small groups with only a handful of properties. There are opportunities for individual investors to get into hotel ownership, and working for small companies has many benefits. ↗ Upward Mobility: the hotel industry is full of examples of individuals rising from entry-level jobs to become a GM (a great and rewarding career!) or hotel owner. In a constrained labor environment, opportunities to cross-train and promote within the industry are even greater 🌎 The Travel: a career working in hotels and hospitality can afford you opportunities to live and work in cities and countries all over the world. These skills are needed – everywhere! 🤝 The Hospitality: this is an industry that is fundamentally about people. Although any service job working with the public can be very tough, the industry is full of individuals that deeply care about connecting with others, which can make for a great working environment What has been your career path in hospitality? What advice would you give to someone considering a career in this industry? #travel #hotels #AMon WSJ: https://lnkd.in/g2_cfgiS A&M Blog: https://lnkd.in/gF2ZXhrQ

More than three-quarters of surveyed hotels are experiencing a staffing shortage, and hotels are increasing pay, benefits, and perks to recruit and retain employees, according to a May survey of hoteliers conducted by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA). Over the last six months, 86% of respondents have increased wages, 52% have offered greater flexibility with hours, and 33% have expanded benefits to cope with the nationwide workforce shortage. Nonetheless, 79% say they are still unable to fill open positions. Seventy-six percent of survey respondents said they are experiencing a staffing shortage, and 13% reported they are severely understaffed, meaning the shortage is affecting their hotel’s ability to operate. The most critical staffing need is housekeeping, with 50% ranking it as their top hiring need.

More hotels, more rooms, and more hiring - but what about more talent? Talent and hiring in hotels are not just about physical labor for housekeeping or F&B; they need to focus on cultivating a skilled workforce in every role and department. Technology is evolving every day, and so must the industry, and the top brains need to start working because the industry needs a lot of workforce and the workforce needs jobs; the industry can surely offer. There's no doubt that the next five years will usher in the golden era of hospitality with the inception of newer brands. But the question remains: Are we adequately prepared for it?

Been hearing similar things from Hotel GM's this month... It seems like going into Thursday - occupancy projections may be around 50-60% only to finish the week around 90% with a ton of last minute bookings and a more localized guest base. "I think that in 2023 people wanted to get out and travel far, visit larger cities, experience new cultures... but the metrics are showing that in 2024 we are serving a relatively more local crowd right now that is wanting to travel but choosing closer, more affordable options last minute." This makes scheduling to match occupancy nearly impossible!!! Gigpro allows Operators the flexibility to match their staffing levels with their occupancy levels. With an on-call list of favorite Pros these GM's are able to ensure their team is never short staffed, their core team feels supported, and they are able to conduct working interviews while increasing Customer Satisfaction Scores!!! F+B / Housekeeping / Maintenance + Engineering / Banquets / Laundry / and more - All of these departments feel the effects of fluctuating occupancy projections - why not provide them with a true resource?! #Hotels #HotelStaffing #Gigwork #OpenJobs
