If I asked you the number 1 indicator of how financially successful a solo/small law firm is, you’d probably say something about the quality of their legal services or how often they win cases. And you’d be wrong. Now that might be the case in larger law firms, where corporate legal departments often hire firms based on name recognition. But not with smaller firms. So what is it then? The quality of their client experience. If you think about it, it makes sense. A good client experience leads to a happy client, even if the result wasn’t what they had hoped. In fact, a client may be happier after a loss where the client experience was good than after a win with a crappy client experience. Happy clients are more likely to: 1) pay on time and without complaint 2) come back for additional legal work 3) refer others All things firms want and that can directly impact the firm’s bottom line. The funny is that most small firms give this short change. They say they understand the importance of the client experience, yet if you ask a majority of their clients they will say that working with the firm was no better than a 5 out of 10. The good news is that it means the bar is low when it comes to distinguishing your client experience from that of other small firms. Just incremental improvements to your practice can vault you to the top in your clients’ eyes. Lesson #2 Learned in 2023: Trust Transfer Works. In the Top 3 Lessons Learned in 2023, Senior Attorney Match’s Jeremy E. Poock, Esq. shares the following as Lesson #2: Trust Transfer Works. As Poock explains, “[W]hen our clients join Growing Law Firms, what we call the ‘Flux Capacitor’ of the sale of Senior Attorney led practices is that Senior Attorneys are transferring the trust of their clients to the lawyers at the law firms that they join.” Poock also shares the following benefits derived from Trust Transfer: “In terms of the benefits that the Trust Transfer offers to our clients, first of all, there is a financial benefit because the terms of the deals are typically based upon Senior Attorneys being paid a percentage of revenues that comes in from their client base. But, beyond that, in terms of the quality of life benefits, I'm just going to show here, really, a compare and contrast . . . When our clients originally come to us, they're often saying that their clients only want to meet with the Senior Attorney. The clients trust the Senior Attorney. They know the Senior Attorney. They only want to work with the Senior Attorney.
