Consumers pulled out all the stops to enjoy themselves over the holiday period - as the latest US retail sales numbers attest. However - without being overly gloomy - it's important to recognize some of the cracks that are now appearing: higher debt being taken on, higher promotions eating into margins, disinflation affecting headline growth for retailers. 2024 will certainly be an interesting year! Retail sales saw a boost in July, thanks to back-to-school shopping and special promotions. According to the CNBC/National Retail Federation Retail Monitor, sales were up 0.74% from June and 0.92% compared to last year. Online shopping, health and personal care, and clothing stores led the gains. Despite cautious spending, consumers are still finding value in essentials, keeping sales strong. STAT OF THE WEEK: The total amount of retail returns in the U.S. in 2023 came to $743 billion. This equates to 14.5% of total retail sales for the year. -- According to the National Retail Federation and Appriss Retail According to the report: ➡️ The average retailer incurs $145M in merchandise returns for every $1B sold. ➡️ Online sales have a higher return rate, with 17.6% or $247B of merchandise purchased online returned, compared to 10.02% for pure brick-and-mortar stores, or $371B in returns. ➡️ Return fraud contributed $101B in overall losses for retailers. ➡️ The holiday season is expected to bring only a slight uptick in the return rate compared with the rest of the year, with a rate of 15.4%. #ecommerce #retail #commerce #returns #returnsmanagement #retailindustry #2023

With total #US #retail #sales growing by 2 per cent in January, the year is off to a reasonable start. That said, there has been a marked slowdown in growth since the back end of last year which suggests that consumers are starting the year off on a more cautious and frugal note. Almost every major segment has seen a decompression in the growth rate, with particularly notable declines in food service and autos – both of which are discretionary sectors where consumers usually reign in spending when they are feeling pressured.
