What's really going on with retail sales trends? By most accounts, the consumer remains strong and in charge, with headline retail spending growth getting a good deal of attention in the press. However, as I point out in this article, when you adjust retail sales for inflation, the picture appears quite different. Real (inflation-adjusted) retail sales have in fact been falling since February, indicating slower retail spending activity. To be fair, real retail sales trends vary a good deal by the type of retail spending - for example, in experiential locations, real retail spending is still positive (stay tuned for an upcoming X-Factor release on Wednesday for more information on retail spending by category), and by demographic. That said, though real retail sales troughed in the early pandemic days, the last time there was a protracted decline in real retail sales was during the GFC. With total US retail sales growing by 2 per cent in January, the year is off to a reasonable start.
