We reached a big milestone in the Port Data Interoperability Grant Program last week: we awarded all the funds to the five participating ports! While we have to wait until the official announcement before we can talk about details here, we used this milestone as an opportunity to meet some of the awesome folks at Port of Oakland in person, and take a tour of their very cool facility. ISC’s project lead Michael Mansour and project assistant Morasha Ahrns were joined by Data CRT's Noah Bruegmann. DataCRT / Noah are part of the grant program's Technical Advisory Committee, which has played such a critical role in this project. Once on-site, our group was joined by Port of Oakland’s Romario James, Pia Franzese, and Carolyn Almquist, who were kind enough to give a tour of the port security ops center and the Evergreen terminal. The security ops center was very cool — modern and impressive — and the Evergreen terminal was just awe-inspiring in its size and scale. After only seeing the port for so long while driving over the Bay Bridge, our group appreciated the opportunity to see it in person. Check out the attached photos to get a sense of the scale! We look forward to announcing more details about the awards within the next couple of weeks, and to working with Port of Oakland and our other stakeholders on the remainder of the project.

On January 4th, the CA Port Data Interoperability Grant Program team held a roundtable discussion with all of the participating ports (Port of Los Angeles, Port of Long Beach , Port of Oakland, Port of San Diego, and Port of Hueneme), led by the California Association of Port Authorities (CAPA). Having CAPA take ownership and lead this discussion was very helpful, as they represent a more neutral party which can hold the interests of all the ports in mind as these new agreements are reached. CAPA also represents the non-containerized ports in CA, and can potentially bring some perspective on interoperability from the smaller ports. The theme of the discussion was how we can use interoperability to help harmonize the data ecosystem. By creating a space for everyone to talk together, we were able to unite on shared stakeholders and data standards, and crucially, collaborate on systems development. Here’s an overview of what was discussed. Together, we: • Shared status updates on the proposal progress • Asked for guidance on getting standardized data from stakeholders • Collaborated around non-containerized standards development • Completed some setup for Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) funding opportunities. This part of the discussion centered on how to use this round of state funding to set the ports up for success in future funding opportunities We’re very happy with how this program is turning out so far, and we look forward to receiving the final grant proposals in February, and then allocating these funds to the participating ports. Thanks again to the California Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) for making this project happen, and for being a great support to all the stakeholders throughout the process.

Our CTO, Andrew Knock, has penned an article on three key areas of the Titan platform (and business) that significantly contribute to data security. Looking closely at Architecture, Technology, and Practice, he summarises critical elements of the foundations we operate and clarifies their benefits. He also covers significant differences between legacy systems and those built on a modern technology stack. If you're interested in learning a little more about data security then it's an interesting read! Full article here - https://bit.ly/3UHqrNw

When you work in anything related to reducing negative impacts, or creating positive change, on our planet and people - whether its addressing biodiversity loss, helping reduce water use, social equality or carbon reduction. The driver for action from a potential client will nearly always be.... "What's in it for us?" Its not always the case, and in the last few years I think this has changed slightly in some areas, but fundamentally your products or services, just like those products or services that don't have societal or environmental positives, have to be beneficial for all stakeholders: ★ The customer - Reduce cost, increase reputation, make money, solve a problem. ★ The company - Increase knowledge, get paid, facilitate future opportunities. ★ The planet - Reduce negative impact, create positive change, regenerate, renew, make something better. If you've got a great product or service in this field don't forget the customer. I often hear people take at length at the benefits for the planet (and in my eyes that is the most important too) but don't forget to tell the customer what's in it for them. As an example for us at Interact - Save massive amounts of energy and carbon (planet) while saving £millions off your costs (customer). #carbonreduction #energyefficiency #ikagi
We created Interact in 2020 on the back of a highly innovative, successful and well funded research project. The aim was to significantly reduce the environmental impact of data centres though IT optimisation. The best way to encourage most businesses to do good things for our environment? Make their IT estates easier to manage and save them lots of money! Since we 2020 we have: ✔️ Analysed over 300 Data Centre’s ✔️ Built the worlds largest data set of IT benchmarks ✔️ Provided hundreds of projects with average energy savings of 72% on the IT ✔️ Worked with customers from 8 to over 80,000 servers ✔️ Identified on average £1.2million of savings per customer on typical estate

Data intereoperability is key in preventing the next supply chain crisis.
ISC is excited to announce that we’re leading a pioneering project, the first of its kind in the US: the California Port Data Interoperability Grant Program. Funding for the Program comes from Schedule (1) of AB-178, of which $27,000,000 will be administered directly to the ports. The overarching goal is to improve data system interoperability between the ports and their stakeholders, with a focus on the adoption of Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) standards. The program consists of five parts: 1. Outreach and discovery 2. Funding criteria development 3. Proposal evaluation 4. Funding awards 5. Technical oversight during implementation phase We’re so pleased to be working with the California Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) on this project, and to be collaborating with Port of Los Angeles, Port of Long Beach, Port of Oakland, Port of San Diego, and Port of Hueneme. Our other excellent stakeholders are Momentum (BuildMomentum.io), acting as grant administrators, as well as Data CRT, Latacora, and Cloud303, who round out the technical advisory committee. Leading the project on ISC’s side is our newest Lead Data Scientist, Michael Mansour.

#AutoCon0 Speaker Highlight: Network Source of Truth and Infrastructure as Code Revisited - Damien Garros Damien is a product owner and chief architect for network automation platforms with a specific focus on data management. Abstract: As an industry, we have made a lot of progress in adopting Automation to manage Network infrastructure in the last few years; however, only a few organizations have been able to reach the expert level, and most are still trying to break the glass ceiling that comes with the solutions available right now. In this talk, we'll explore the current challenges that most organizations are facing in reaching the expert level in automation. In the second part, we'll explore a new approach to building an Automation Platform with, at its core, a new generation of Source of Truth that brings the best of Data Modeling and Version Control together. https://lnkd.in/ePQG_y43 #networkautomation #datamanagement #sourceoftruth

[#Geeky #monday #Goodread] NV5 Mission Critical Data Centre on the #moon? Instuitive Machines successfully landed on the Moon. As part of that it carried a virtual data center - a small software deployment on its existing IT infrastructure. Developed by Lonestar Data Holdings, it is the first step in a plan to build data centers on the Moon. If you think T&C Manager and engineers are cool, this has literally making it even cooler 😎 .
