We're two months away from #BlackHistoryMonth in the United States and now is the time to start thinking about how you will honor Black history within your workplaces. Of course you should celebrating and centering Blackness in different ways throughout the year (I give the blueprint on how to do this in Chapter 10 of my book Decentering ⚪️ness in the Workplace) but it's also nice to have time designated for these efforts throughout the year. Some topics I love to explore include: •What does it mean to Center Black Employees in Your Workplace? •Understanding and Addressing Hair Discrimination at Work •Dismantling and Disrupting Anti-Blackness in Your Workplace •Addressing Misogynoir: Creating Safer Spaces for Black Women at Work If your organization or institution is looking for a speaker or workshop facilitator for BHM, don't wait until the last week of January. As we commemorate Black History Month, we not only celebrate the past but also honor the enduring strength and resilience that continue to inspire change. This February, we reflect on the profound contributions of Black communities across all sectors, from civil rights trailblazers to pioneers in science, technology, and the arts. Their achievements have indelibly shaped our world and underscored the importance of equity, justice, and diversity. Amidst these reflections, we pay special homage to Madam CJ Walker, a beacon of innovation, empowerment, and philanthropy. Madam Walker rose above the constraints of poverty and discrimination to revolutionize hair care for Black women, thereby laying the foundation for generations of entrepreneurs. Her story is a testament to resilience and vision, transforming personal success into avenues for widespread social change and uplifting Black communities. Madam Walker's legacy extends beyond her entrepreneurial spirit; it is a reminder of the power each of us holds to foster change, advocate for equality, and create opportunities for others. Her life's work challenges us to see beyond our immediate circumstances, to give back, and to invest in the potential of every individual. As we share this tribute to Madam CJ Walker, let it serve as a catalyst for us to engage in meaningful conversations, educate ourselves, and take actionable steps towards a more inclusive society. Her story, and the stories of countless other Black individuals, weave the rich tapestry of our shared history and guide us in our journey towards a future marked by equality for all. Let’s honor Black History Month not just in February but throughout the year by learning, growing, and supporting one another in our collective quest for justice and equity. Portrait of Madam C. J. Isn't this answer obvious? It's definitely a great article. My point is... Way before Black History Month, one simply needed to ask any Black communities to understand our daily experiences have been the same whether it's in the workplace, in the streets, or on across social media. Rarely I come across someone with a great story that their org did something meaningful that drives real change to elevate inclusion. Most programs are just transactional and establish no accountability. #antibullying, #antiracism, #integritymatters, #equityandinclusion. https://lnkd.in/ewj8cTwE

Dedicated Allyship and Anti-Racism Educator, Facilitator, Trainer and creator committed to promoting inclusive cultures and empowering individuals and organisations to drive positive change.
During this Black History Month, it's important to recognise that it's not solely a time to reflect on the past; it's an opportunity to drive progress. Research has indicated that when a mere 3.5% of a population actively participates in social or political change, it can often lead to success. Consider how this 3.5% figure could apply within your organisation - this small but significant fraction can ignite profound transformation. But it's not just about the numbers; it's about Active Allies and Accomplices standing up and making a difference, not just for one day, one week, or one month, but every single day of the year. We must turn this knowledge into a catalyst for progress. This Black History Month, let's embrace the opportunity to learn, listen, and most importantly, to take action. It's a chance to recognise that we have the same number of people using their voices right now. The question is, what about the others? How can we enable and empower them to use their voices too? Here are a few steps we can all take to be Active Allies: 1. Amplify Black Voices: Use your platform to share and amplify the voices of Black leaders, creators, and change-makers. Elevate their stories and experiences. 2. Educate Ourselves: Commit to ongoing self-education about the history, struggles, and achievements of the Black community. Knowledge is a powerful tool for change. 3. Engage in Conversations: Open dialogues about racial equality and justice within your network. Engage in respectful and constructive conversations, even when they're uncomfortable. 4. Support Black-Owned Businesses: Put your pounds behind the causes you believe in by actively supporting Black-owned businesses and initiatives. 5. Advocate for Change: Advocate for policies and initiatives that promote equality and justice. Use your voice to push for systemic change. Remember, it's not about grand gestures; it's about daily, consistent action. Each one of us has a role to play in creating a more inclusive and equitable world. Let's take this opportunity during Black History Month to commit to being Active Allies and Accomplices, not just for the next few weeks, but every day of the year. Together, we can make a meaningful difference. #BlackHistoryMonth #Allyship #Inclusivity #ChangeMakers

“𝘐𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘱𝘪𝘷𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘶𝘮𝘢 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘫𝘰𝘺, 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 & 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦.. 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨.” ✨ Shelley-Anne Vidal #BlackHistoryMonth goes beyond commemorating the past; it's about acknowledging today's change makers in Black communities and how non-Black accomplices are actively contributing to co-building brighter Black futures. Consider these actions you can take below as both an individual and a leader within an organization to advocate for change not just during a specific month, but as an ongoing commitment throughout the year: 𝗔𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹: embark on a journey to understand how Black history has shaped your local communities, don't stop educating yourself, and actively engage in sincere, transformative actions to unlearn anti-Blackness. Be willing to listen, learn, and acknowledge different experiences. Be vigilant about challenging and addressing micro-aggressions or racist remarks when you encounter them. Stand up against discriminatory behaviour. Amplify the often-untold Black stories. Share and amplify content created by Black individuals. Use your platforms to raise awareness about important issues and celebrate achievements within the Black community. Support Black businesses by showcasing and purchasing their work. 𝗔𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: the commitment goes beyond words. It's about dismantling anti-Black systemic barriers, creating safer places for Black employees, putting an end to tokenism hiring, and closing the pay gap for Black women. It means reinvesting in and REHIRING your DEI&B teams, allocate substantial budgets to ERGs / Diversity Councils, and foster collaboration with local Black vendors for various services. Haven't started yet? Conduct thorough audits of your workforce representation, DEI&B initiatives, and design of employee programs to ensure genuine equity, inclusivity, support, and progression for Black employees. #BlackFuturesMonth #BlackExcellence #BlackJoy #BlackResilience

I was thrilled to share my knowledge with Foresters Financial and their staff across 3 countries about how to ensure that their Black staff feel very much included at work. Using my experience as a Social Worker, Psychotherapist and Wellness Consultant, I used research & data as I talked about the urgent need for this conversation, the current experience of Black individuals at work, the detrimental effects of a lack of inclusion and the need to push past the status quo. Of course we discussed to great benefits of intentional inclusion. The question we all need to ask ourselves now is: who is in charge of “inclusion” in the workplace? The very term implies that the workplace belongs to a person/group and that it’s theirs to include/exclude at will. There is still so much work to be done. #corporateconsultant #hrconsulting
At Foresters, we believe in the strength of diversity and are committed to fostering an environment where every voice is heard and valued. #BlackHistoryMonth provides us with an opportunity to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the Black community’s rich heritage. Throughout February we celebrated the Black community at Foresters through events and articles showcasing Black achievement and highlighting challenges still present today. To close out our celebrations, our Black@Foresters employee resource group hosted a learning session with Roxanne Francis, MSW, RSW, about Black inclusion in the workplace. The interactive session featured discussions on allyship, challenges, and opportunities. Learn more about IDE at Foresters: https://ow.ly/tK1H50QJmgz #ThisIsForesters #diversityandinclusion
