Chronic Multimorbidity Over Time: The MTOP Study Tracks Patterns in Older Adults A ten-year study by researchers at Parc Taulí University Hospital (Parc Taulí Hospital Universitari) in Spain examined chronic health conditions in over 3,900 patients aged 65 and older. The MTOP (Multimorbidity Trajectories in Older Patients) study used data from the Shared Clinical History of Catalonia to identify patterns of multimorbidity, the presence of two or more chronic diseases. The study found a dramatic increase in multimorbidity from 73.6% to 98.3% over ten years, with five key clusters of conditions identified including metabolic and vascular diseases, musculoskeletal and pain syndromes, and unspecific conditions. These findings highlight the need for healthcare systems to adapt to manage the growing complexity of chronic diseases in older adults and inform the development of personalized care strategies. Every one of us knows a loved one affected by diabetes, but it is time we asked them: “Do you know what Diabetic Retinopathy is?” The lack of awareness about Diabetic Retinopathy among patients is a global concern. There is hope - through learning, sharing, and building communities of health professionals, we can come together to solve this problem by taking eye screening to the last mile. Remidio is excited to create awareness and build communities empowered with knowledge through Orbis Cybersight’s webinar on “Transforming Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Globally through Innovative Technologies.” Dr. Sobha Sivaprasad, Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, will explore models for Diabetic Retinopathy screenings, focusing on enhancing local health systems and addressing barriers. The goal is to triage high-risk patients and implement predictive models for effective prevention programs." How do women feel about Recurrent Cystitis? 🤔 RC is a condition characterized by multiple cystitis episodes within a year, with a significant impact on daily life, including social, professional, and sexual aspects. The following study delved into the experiences of women suffering from RC, revealing their challenges and needs. Key findings: 🔍 Confusion about the causes and risk factors of RC, highlighting a need for clear information and education. 😔 Significant impact on daily life, leading to social isolation and anxiety. 💡 Varied coping strategies, with many patients seeking alternatives to antibiotics and emphasizing the importance of increased fluid intake. ⚕️ Dissatisfaction with the current approach of physicians, including difficulties in accessing timely care and a desire for more autonomy in managing the condition. Based on these insights, enhancing patient education, fostering shared decision-making, and reducing inappropriate antibiotic use are essential in order to meet patients' needs. Let’s target primary prevention strategies Vs secondary/tertiary approach Kevin Fernando does a fantastic summary of an approach to prevention of those at high risk of Type 2 Diabetes.

"I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure" Excerpt from the Hippocratic Oath (modern version). Here's my Medscape Medscape UK WebMD UK (formerly MGP Ltd) Medscape Global Network Primary Care #Hack on identifying people at high risk of #T2D and appropriate interventions. Key Messages: 🎯 Prediabetes is associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality & CVD in the general population and in those with ASCVD 🎯 NICE PH38 recommends a two-stage strategy to identify people at high risk of T2D 🎯 Women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus are almost 10x more likely to develop T2D over their lifetime than women without a history of GDM 🎯 Women living with PCOS are 1.4x more likely to develop T2D over their lifetime than women without PCOS. This increased risk is independent of baseline body weight I've also constructed a flowchart to match interventions to risk in people with pre-diabetes. I hope you find it helpful. While lipoprotein #apheresis used in the management of #HoFH can be highly effective in lowering cholesterol levels and reducing cardiovascular risk, it is an invasive procedure that requires specialized equipment and trained healthcare providers. It is usually conducted in specialized centers or hospitals with expertise in lipid management and apheresis therapy. The procedures can be physically and mentaly taxing, particularly for children due to their smaller size, limited ability to sit still for extended periods, and potential fear or anxiety about medical procedures requiring big needles, machines and lasting for several hours at a time. Apheresis to be effective is required on a weekly of forthnighly basis, meaning children with HoFH miss out on school, while their carers or adult patients often compromise their time off for the regular hospital visits. Without appropriate #treatment, individuals with HoFH have a significantly reduced life expectancy compared to the general population due to the increased risk of cardiovascular events and complications from a young age . Bring joy and excitment to our world. "During the second wave of COVID-19, there was a notable increase in reported cases of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), particularly among semi-patients. Following the pandemic, there has been a concerning trend of younger individuals, some as young as 23, being diagnosed with CVDs. This underscores the alarming impact COVID-19 has had on heart health."- Dr. Kumar Kenchappa, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Manipal Hospitals (MHEPL) the ET Now Indian Cardiac Care Innovation Summit 2024 presented by Meril, in association with the Indian Heart Association.
