Internship programs that offer fair compensation and unique learning and growth opportunities are essential for employers looking to build their early talent pipeline and position themselves as an employer of choice among Gen Z candidates. As we read through nominations for this year's Top 100 Internship Programs List, it was great to see how hundreds of employers are thoughtfully growing their programs and working to provide unique and valuable experiences for their interns. Here are four things that stood out after reading through the nominations: 1. 99% of the employers that nominated their programs offer paid internships, with a growing portion providing additional benefits like employee assistance programs, mental health resources, healthcare and wellness benefits, housing stipends, relocation assistance, and even 401K matching. 2. Many programs have adopted an outcome-centered approach with a focus on providing full-time employment opportunities and increasing conversion rates. 3. Many employers are getting their intern alumni involved through alumni-led panels, mentorship for current interns, and exclusive alumni professional networks. 4. Employers put a heavy emphasis on gathering feedback during and after their programs to make improvements and remain attractive employers for Gen Z talent. In doing so, they're tailoring their programs to intern needs and providing better development opportunities. #nationalinternday

☀ It's that time of the year when many interns are joining your workforce: Are you prepared to support them and unearth your next rock-star employee?! 💪 Here's a list of questions I suggest supervisors/interns go through before the start of any internships and once the internship starts: 👉 1) What's your goal with this intern? Are you hoping to train someone who will continue part-time after the summer? Or someone who will stay on full-time in the future? Interns who are given the same attention and opportunities as employees are more likely to engage with your organization and stick around! 👉 2) Who will be the primary and secondary supervisor (what if someone is out of the office, or there's a conflict with one supervisor)? While we want our interns to learn to take initiative and address conflicts healthily, we also want to provide them with a safe place to learn. If the conflict is with one supervisor, is there someone else they can count on to teach them how to navigate challenging situations? 👉 3) Is there a plan for frequent and objective evaluations? I'm a fan of weekly check-ins so there are no surprises. At the minimum, I recommend having one-third of the way through and two-thirds of the way through evaluations, before the final one. This allows interns to have clear objectives to work on and get an opportunity to reach measurable milestones. 👉 4) Finally, what's your communication plan with this intern? How often will you meet "officially" to offer guidance and check in on tasks and progress? Weekly is the minimum recommended time! You might meet more often, but avoid going more than a week without that formal sit down. ................ Internships can be life-changing! Not only are you potentially "unearthing" your new rock star 😎 ; internships are an opportunity for your organization to evaluate their training and opportunities for early workforce development! Happy internship season! 🤩 ................. Want some help structuring appealing and life-changing internships? Identifying Real vs. Fake Internships 🎓 Clear Payment Details 👉 Make sure the internship offer clearly states how much you'll get paid. No surprises! 📊 Performance Expectations 👉 Check if they tell you what you need to achieve to earn your pay. It keeps things fair. 💼 Watch out for Tricky Titles 👉 If they want you to sell stuff but call it a finance internship, it's probably not legit. 💰 Don't Pay to Work 👉 Real internships don't ask you to shell out money. If they do, it's not the real deal. 👥 Get Support 👉 Make sure they assign someone to help you learn. You don't want to feel lost. 🔍 Ask Other Interns: 👉 Reach out to past interns on LinkedIn. They can tell you what it's really like. Anything else I should add? Follow Jay Monga for more such content! #internship #resume #interview #cv #finance

👉 Why it's time to end unpaid internships It might be a few years ago for some of us (or a few more for others - ahem), but surely we all remember how tricky it was starting our career in comms? Do you know what makes it more difficult though? Unpaid internships. They’re often required to help you get a foot in the door, but really, they create unnecessary barriers because not everyone can afford to take on a full-time job without getting paid. No really. (Who came up with getting someone to do a full-time job without paying them anyway?!). That’s why we’re committed to paying interns (at least) the National Living Wage. Always. And if you want to find out more about the difference a work placement can make for someone at the start of their career, you should check out Elisabeth Drinkwater's brilliant blog. She recently completed an internship with us and has been a valuable (and fully paid!) member of the team. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eR63XAdE

An internship can be a great start to a career with your organization. Make it even better by recognizing and appreciating their efforts. Over 80% of employees say recognition impacts their drive to succeed. 71% believe more recognition would prevent them from leaving. Interns, despite not being full-time employees, feel the same way. Appreciation validates their contributions and sparks their interest in the field. Interns, as you wrap up your summer internships, here are some actions to consider doing before you leave. These actions will help you gain a clear understanding of your achievements, obtain valuable feedback, and strengthen your connections to support future career growth: 1. Reflect on Achievements and Development -Evaluate which goals and projects were met, exceeded, or need further development. -Document key projects and contributions, highlighting the impact you made. Identify and highlight any new skills you developed during the internship. 2. Gather Feedback and References -Request feedback from key stakeholders, managers, peers, and others you worked with. -Identify internal references who can speak to your work and skills. 3. Understand Performance and Future Opportunities -Have a meeting with your manager to review your performance for the summer. -Discuss the possibility of being recommended for rehire or receiving a return offer if applicable. Congrats to all the summer interns out there! You have so much to be proud of! 🎉 👏 What other actions have you found strengthened your network and future career opportunities? Unpaid internships—what’s wrong with that? As a professional, I completely understand that hiring someone with no experience is more work than it is worth most times. At the same time, the experience gained with an internship can make a huge difference when job searching. What this culture promotes is giving those with money a leg up as only those from wealthy/well-off families can afford to work without pay. I encourage all to think about this aspect and consider paying at least minimum wage for all internships. Let’s level the playing field.
