Fundraisers, is there anything better than asking supporters why they care about the mission of your organization? For me, hands down, there is nothing more fulfilling that hearing a donor share about their "why", and how they see our work as worthy of their gift of time or treasure. You might go into a meeting hoping to learn more about them but come out reminded of why you wake up everyday and do what you do. Of course, we also need to be asking lots of other questions, like: - How well do we communicate the impact of your gift? - Are we maintaining a high level of transparency about funding? - How can we be responsive to a need you see in our community? So many great conversations to be had, if we'll take the time to listen and engage our community of support, no matter the level of giving.

Have you ever noticed that even the most dedicated champion of your organization can sometimes miss or ignore your nonprofit’s messaging? And it’s not for lack of care or commitment. Life’s hustle and bustle can make it easy for things to slip through the cracks. We see this all the time with matching gifts: an individual cares deeply about a cause, yet they don’t submit matching gift requests unless consistently reminded. This has got me thinking, and I’d really love to get your take on it: Why do you think engaged supporters might skip out on actions like matching gift submissions unless reminded? Have you ever been in a situation where you intended to take an action for a cause you care about but ended up not doing it? What held you back? And on the flip side: As nonprofits, how can we better support and motivate our community to take these steps? Are there approaches or tweaks in communication that you’ve found to be particularly effective? Would love to get your take on this: Laney Zuerlein Marissa Rivers Greg Sims Franny Kavin Dalia Ahmed Allison Haglund Evan Bonsett-Veal Andrew Dobney Tim McCleary

Fundraisers, answer this question: How would your donors describe you? Do they see you as a passionate, enthusiastic advocate for your mission? Do they enjoy getting a call from you? Or do they feel like they'd rather hit the little red phone button every time they see it's your organization on the other end of the line? Building meaningful relationships with your donors is ESSENTIAL to fundraising. Yet it's often overlooked or shrugged off due to time constraints or fundraisers feeling unsure of how to connect in a way that feels authentic. We created a free guide that will teach you how you can begin today to engage your donors in a more meaningful, impactful way. Sharing Stories with Heart: How MemoryFox is Transforming Our Impact 📢 At I Would Rather Be Reading the personal stories of the children we serve shape our mission. Building trust and meaningful relationships is key to our work. Recently, we started using MemoryFox, an ethical storytelling platform we discovered at the Nonprofit Storytelling Conference. It has revolutionized how we capture and share stories from our children, families, volunteers, donors, and staff. This platform makes sharing comfortable and encourages everyone to reveal their “why”. MemoryFox allows us to ask: - Why do you enjoy attending IWRBR camps? - How has attending camp helped you grow as a student? - Why do you choose to volunteer with IWRBR? - How do you see IWRBR impacting the community? and so much more! Thank you, MemoryFox, for supporting our commitment to ethical storytelling. Your platform was crucial in making our First Annual Hearts For Hope Impact Breakfast a huge success! #EthicalStorytelling #NonprofitImpact #CommunitySupport #MemoryFox #IWRBR #SupportEducation #GiveBack #Volunteer Carly Euler Natalie Monroe 🦊

Does it ever feel like parts of your community are always an arm's length away? Recently, I've posted about how internal words and phrases and misconceptions about how you work can keep people from truly connecting with what you do and how Strategic Listening can help. Another way people may not be connecting to your work are through barriers. Barriers can be things like (these are actual barriers from my clients); 👩⚖️ I don't have the authority to make that decision and don't know to sell it to someone else ⏲ The time commitment to fill out this form is too much for the value it would bring me 📣 This isn't for me, it seems like you are talking to someone else These barriers keep people from making donations, completing your programs, and following your calls to action. The good news is you can discover these barriers, large and small, and remove them. It's like removing the rocks and pebbles that make a path difficult to walk down. Listening helps not only uncover those barriers but also gives you the specifics around them so you can make direct changes to remove them, helping your community work WITH you. Things like - designing tools to help others sell rather than sell to them, refining forms to make them more manageable, and creating communications that look and feel like your audience segments. Do you know what barriers your community is struggling with?

𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗗𝗢𝗡'𝗧 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 - 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗱. 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄: ✅ Targeting donors who already - care about the things you stand for. ✅ Showing donors how a donation to your organisation will - help them achieve their goals. ✅ Demonstrating a successful track record of working in partnership. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 - 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗣𝗦 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂. I am not suggesting, if donors say "jump" - you should say "how high"? Or to bend over backwards to get the cash - that's called chasing the money and is something very different. Don't do that. 𝗔𝗻 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁 If your website, emails, applications, proposals, pitches, social pages are full of words like "we, our and us" - you're trying to get them to understand you. If your communication includes a lot of words like "you and your" - you're showing donors you understand them (and their needs).
