🔥 INFERNO - Recycling Industrial Waste Through the Application of Thermophotovoltaic and Thermoelectric: A Novel Hybrid Technology for Electricity Generation - had its Kick-off Meeting in an online form on June 4th, 2024. 🎆 Partners gathered to set up the three-year action plan for the project, and its main and specific objectives. 📣 🎉 📣 📣 📣 I can not be more excited about our just published article in Nature! Five years ago, we joined forces with the best partners ever to develop the #PrISMa_Platform, a holistic and in-silico platform for accelerating sorbent-based carbon capture applications. We did so by integrating molecular simulations with process design, techno-economics and life-cycle assessment. Such integration allowed us to drive materials discovery from a holistic approach, so innovations in the materials space can be translated more successfully and quickly into the real application. We analysed 66 different case studies with different #CO2 sources, process configurations, available utilities and in different regions of the world and we identified top-performing materials that outperform state-of-the art #carboncapture technologies. PrISMa represents a significant leap towards achieving net-zero targets by focusing R&D efforts on achievable performance at scale. It’s set to play a crucial role in informing investment strategies and policy decisions for sustainable carbon-capture solutions. This work is the result of a giant effort made by the whole PrISMa team and recognises our innovative approach and the power and potential of the platform. PhD students Ya Tang, Huan Zhao, and Xiangbei Liu, alum Jace Henry '24, and Professor Yan Li co-authored a study which shows that thermoelectric generators (TEGs) incorporating metamaterial designs offer significant potential to enhance energy harvesting efficiency and broaden application possibilities. "By capturing waste heat from industrial processes, vehicles, and electronic devices, these metamaterial-based TEGs can contribute to energy conservation and promote environmental sustainability," says Li. Low-temperature electrochemical conversion can do exactly the opposite: converting waste CO2 to much needed base and fine chemicals, thereby helping to make fossil fuels a thing of the past. This technology has already been demonstrated at lab-scale. But when it comes to assessing economic viability at factory-scale, techno-economic studies incorrectly assume that performance variables (such as energy efficiency or reaction product specificity) can be tuned independently of each other. Isabell Bagemihl developed a multi-scale model – from reaction channel to full-scale process – for assessing reactor design for electrochemical CO2 reduction from a techno-economic perspective. Specifically considering the performance interdependencies, it yields performance targets that are actually achievable in current electrolyser designs. She demonstrated her model for a single reaction (CO2 to ethylene) but it can be readily adapted to many more. Increasing the understanding from lab-scale to economic impact, her research may help guide future fundamental electrolyses research, bringing a closed carbon cycle ever closer. Excited to share our recent collaboration with Polytechnique Montréal (Professor Clara Santato and Molood Hoseinizadeh). In this work, we introduce the first use of our MWCNT produced from our patented technology: natural gas photo reforming at ambient conditions as multifunctional conductive additives. By adding oxygen surface functionalized MWCNT (O-MWCNT) to biosourced, redox-active Sepia melanin, we have established a novel pseudocapacitive electrode material through a one-pot water ultrasonication process, without the use of any surfactant or organic/inorganic binder. These O-MWCNTs have been instrumental in facilitating (i) the formation of efficient conductive pathways between Sepia granules and (ii) enhancing the efficiency of electronic coupling between the ultrasound-treated carbon cloth and the Sepia melanin granules. The MWCNT:Sepia-based semi-solid-state symmetric supercapacitors exhibit a high capacitance of up to 118 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1. Furthermore, these devices offer a high energy density of 18 Wh kg−1, a power density of up to 221 W kg−1, and demonstrate remarkable cycling stability with 100% capacitance retention and Coulombic efficiency after 10,000 cycles.
