Three months ago, I had the esteemed opportunity to engage in a pivotal research initiative at the renowned ILL - Institut Laue Langevin in Grenoble, France. Utilizing the sophisticated IN1-Lagrange hot neutron 3-axis spectrometer equipped with a Cu220 monochromator, our team embarked on a rigorous exploration of sulfur confined in nanoporous materials. Our research aims to synthesize new sulfur-based nanocomposites optimized for gas adsorption applications, crucial for addressing environmental challenges such as CO2 capture and hydrogen storage. This research is a cornerstone of the StaR-S project (https://lnkd.in/dMTGS48Q), generously supported by the ANR, the French National Research Agency The insights garnered from this intensive research endeavor not only deepen our understanding of the material properties but also enhance our capacity to develop tailored solutions for gas storage and environmental remediation. The collaborative environment at ILL, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, fosters a fertile ground for scientific inquiry and innovation. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this groundbreaking project and look forward to sharing further developments as our research progresses (https://lnkd.in/dTe9UrkQ). #MaterialScience #Nanotechnology #EnvironmentalScience #ILL #StaRSSulphurProject #ANR #ScientificResearch #Sustainability

However, the overuse of antibiotics has led to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, like methicillin-resistant 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴 (MRSA), which causes around 150,000 infections annually in Europe. 🕵♂️ In response to this issue, researchers are exploring new antibacterial agents. 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐬 (LCFAs) are one option due to their ability to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis, disrupt membranes, and interfere with DNA replication. However, LCFA solubility presents a challenge in developing them as bactericides. 🔫 LCFA molecules need to be solubilized to become effective bactericides. Temperature and concentration influence their solubility, as LCFA either crystallize or form micelles, reducing their availability for antibacterial action. Balancing these factors is key to optimizing their performance. 🇫🇷 French researchers explored using choline, an organic counterion, to improve LCFA solubility. By adding #choline, they reduced the temperatures required to dissolve previously crystallized LCFAs. The resulting complexes, 𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙩-𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙤𝙖𝙥𝙨, 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐜𝐨-𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬. 📈 This successful synthesis allowed for quantitative testing of the properties of these LCFA-choline solutions, determining their effectiveness against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), they analyzed the molecular structure of these complexes, revealing elliptical micelles. ✅ Interestingly, the LCFA-choline complexes were 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐌𝐑𝐒𝐀 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐄. 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐢, demonstrating their specificity and therefore potential in combating antibiotic resistance. 💥 We just love breaking records—even our own! Earlier this year, we set a new standard for SLD modulation amplitudes in nanodiamond-based nanoparticle polymer composites (NPC) gratings. Today, I’m excited to share that we have already surpassed that record with a new class of NPC gratings incorporating hyperbranched polymers (HBP) as organic nanoparticles! 🚀 At the Deutsche Neutronenstreutagung 2024, we made the first official announcement of this breakthrough. While the results are being prepared for publication, the findings hold great promise for slow neutron experiments. A huge thank you to the PSI Paul Scherrer Institut for hosting our neutron diffraction experiment, and to University of Vienna and ILL - Institut Laue Langevin for their continued support. Special thanks to our amazing collaborators led by Prof. Yasuo Tomita for sharing more than just expertise with us!
