🏘 Low emission zones (LEZ) and zero emission zones (ZEZ) are important tools to help cities to improve their air quality and address associated health impacts. LEZs have been successfully implemented in Stockholm since 1996, Milan since 2008, and Brussels since 2018. However, their introduction can sometimes be controversial and met by resistance from the public and businesses, who fear the possibility of costly, inconvenient or unequal socio-economic impacts. So, what can cities do to get their citizens and businesses on board? As part of a study for the Clean Air Fund, we produced case studies that reveal some common threads related to how cities can engage and communicate with stakeholders when developing a LEZ, and how they can address some of the potential socio-economic impacts during the LEZ’s implementation. The next case studies on Warsaw, where LEZ will soon be implemented, and Sofia will be added this summer, with a final research paper published and discussed in a webinar early this September. 📗 Find out more in our briefs written by Emma Watkins, Emma Bergeling, Elena Marchetti, and CHIARA ANTONELLI ⤵ https://lnkd.in/etevNzGR 📑 Read also this blog on Stockholm, a pioneer in this area ⤵ https://lnkd.in/eMNh3GAx ℹ For more information on the study, or to receive an invitation for the final webinar in September, contact Emma Watkins. #LowEmissionZones #ZeroEmissionZones #AirQuality #AirPollution

🌬 BREATHING CLEAN AIR 🌿 👉 96% of the EU’s urban population are exposed to health damaging levels of air pollution with children, elderly, people in poor health, women, and socio-economic disadvantaged groups being hit hardest 🚴♂️ As a frequent cyclist along the heavy traffic roads of Brussels, I am glad that steps are being taken to improve air quality in cities around Europe for cleaner air and better health 💚 Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) are currently working for the Clean Air Fund to conduct five case studies on how Low and Zero Emission Zones can be implemented in a socially acceptable way. Below is the publication of the first three: Stockholm, Milan, and Brussels 👇

🚀Our series of case studies on Low Emission Zones (LEZ) in EU cities is now complete! As part of a study for the Clean Air Fund, we have examined the implementation of LEZ across five EU cities: Stockholm, Milan, Brussels, 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗮, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘄 Our findings reveal seven key strategies for LEZ development and implementation. These strategies highlight common threads regarding how cities can effectively engage and communicate with stakeholders and address potential socio-economic impacts during the LEZ development and implementation process. ➡Find out more in our briefs written by Emma Watkins, Emma Bergeling, Elena Marchetti, and CHIARA ANTONELLI https://lnkd.in/etevNzGR A final research paper will be published with further synthesis of the case study findings, and its findings will be discussed at a dedicated webinar, in early September 2024. ℹ For more information on the study, or to receive an invitation for the final webinar in September, contact Emma Watkins. #LowEmissionZones #Airquality #cities #Warsaw #Brussels #Milan #Stockholm #Sofia

According to the Numbeo Quality of Life Index, The Hague ranks highest in the world, scoring well in climate, health care, and safety. European cities dominated the top spots on this list with another two Dutch cities –Eindhoven and Rotterdam– also in the top 5. https://bit.ly/4fiKfz0

"Cork City has reached a significant milestone, ranking as the 15th cleanest city in Europe and the top city in Ireland for air quality, according to the latest report by the European Environment Agency (EEA). This remarkable achievement places Cork ahead of many similarly sized European cities. The cleanest air in Europe, from a survey of 372 cities, was recorded in Uppsala, Sweden. Cork City’s air quality was measured at 5.2 μg/m³, slightly above the World Health Organization’s (WHO) guideline of 5 μg/m³. Cork’s ranking in this European comparison reflects the city’s commitment to improving air quality in recent years. Initiatives such as the Air Quality Strategy, the establishment of a Clean Air Zone, citizen science projects, and Cork’s hosting of Clean Air Day have all contributed to the city’s success." https://lnkd.in/eMyPq2Uw

International Urbanist – Author What if Women Designed the City? – Regenerative Designer – Spatial Thinker
Preparing my presentation for the forthcoming Smart City Expo Curitiba on 'The rise of 20-minute neighbourhoods –how cities can become greener, wilder, more inclusive, livable and poetic. I will be joining a conversation with peer urbanists facilitated by Glaico Gundim dos Santos in one of my best cities of Brazil, Curitiba- home of IPPUC - Instituto de Pesquisa e Planejamento Urbano de Curitiba and of so many co-workers over the years. The overall topic for the discussion is: How can cities foster circular economy and reduce ecological footprint? Do you have any tested ideas...? #SCECWB2024

In the past few weeks, I've had the privilege to listen and engage with experts passionate about Low Emission Zones (LEZs). The first session, a webinar by C40 Cities, delved into the pathways to LEZs. The discussion predominantly revolved around international experiences, drawing insights from cities like London and Milan. Experts shared experiences on LEZ implementations, alongside discussions on reshaping the narrative around sectoral contributions to air pollution in India. Similarly, the one-day workshop on LEZs by The International Council on Clean Transportation covered a spectrum of themes, ranging from defining LEZs to estimating potential impacts and designing legal pathways. Notably, both sessions underscored the need for Indian cities to customise their approaches to LEZ implementation. I firmly believe that rather than merely replicating European strategies, we should go one step forward by addressing additional challenges related to our unique landscape and urbanization dynamics. Data and technology will be crucial tools in generating evidence, conducting integrated policy analyses, and reshaping policy narratives to influence resident behaviour and perception positively. Furthermore, in addressing transportation-related emissions in Indian cities, it's imperative to address the reduction of both exhaust and non-exhaust emissions as integral components of the solution, rather than separate discussions. We are eager to share our forthcoming findings on Low Emission Zones, and until then stay tuned to Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) for updates. #cleantransportation #lowemissions
