The Chance to Compete Act is expected to be signed by President Biden. The Act will codify a technical and skills-based approach to hiring federal employees versus the current self-evaluation approach which makes it easy for candidates to manipulate their level of qualification, as candidates can rate themselves as “expert” across each assessment question. I cannot AGREE more with this assessment from a personnel/human capital issue which is leaving the services high and dry with not just “warm bodies” but potentially stellar talent that just needs the right support and conditions to grow. Could be cybersecurity or IT or something else. Many, but not all, in cybersecurity and IT come from a stint in the armed services. It’s our industry’s feeder / farm team if you will. Real Talk: I retired from the USAF last year around this time. I did my 20 (Active, Reserve, Guard) and was ready to move on. I NEVER would have got the chance to single-handedly change the course of my life had it not been for two things. 1) my strong desire to enlist 2) my recruiter working with me on my OWN medical wavier I do wish I could have found him during my career and thanked him for the assistance. “Additionally, recruiters are neither medical professionals nor empowered to evaluate an applicant holistically, which, in fact, is the intent of the waiver process” I’m not blaming recruiters from being put in this situation BUT at least the “service before self and integrity first” core values of the USAF should prompt these recruiters to work harder at NOT letting potential talent get away from the service. #HRproblems #recruiterproblems #oldmindset #cybertalent Sarah Lovell
The oft forgotten part of what makes diverse, inclusive, & equitable teams is accessibility. As someone who only serves in uniform because I had multiple allies & advisors to help me overcome the medical waiver process, I’m so proud of my Maryland Air National Guard colleague, Joe Schuman, for continuing to press for better onboarding pathways. The need for #cyber talent only amplifies this call. https://lnkd.in/eX7r7Myy
