Was an honour to be asked to speak at the latest Quartet Community Foundation event. I used the time to talk about the social model of disability. The social model of disability is the understanding that disability is something that is created by society.  This is because disabled people face barriers that stop them from taking part in society in the same way as non-disabled people. There are physical barriers that disabled people face. These could include things like: - A sign that someone with a visual impairment can’t read.  - An inaccessible building without wheelchair ramps.  - A webpage with flashing animations that could trigger a seizure. There are also social barriers or attitudinal barriers, like stereotypical beliefs that non-disabled people have about disabled people. Assuming that a disabled person “can’t do” something creates a barrier for that person. According to the social model of disability, it’s these barriers that make a person disabled.  Disability isn’t something that exists inside your body or your mind. It’s something that is created by an inaccessible society. Here at Paul's Place, we work to break down these barriers every day.

Please consider focusing (some of) your #givingtuesday generosity on Center for Policing Equity (I've been on CPE's Board since before the pandemic). At CPE, we gather and analyze data on behaviors within public safety systems and use those data to help communities achieve safer policing outcomes. Our goal is to make policing less racist, less deadly, and less omnipresent. We believe we can drive meaningful change by ensuring communities and law enforcement have the evidence-based resources they need to redesign public safety, build community trust, and achieve racial equity. In 2023, grantmaking through Charityvest reached new heights. Our grantmaking grew considerably, funding greater impact, with organizations supported across all major charitable sectors. Here are some key grantmaking stats from 2023: ➪ $32M in grants (🔼60% from 2022) ➪ 6,855 unique organizations were supported (🔼17%) ➪ With a payout rate of 54% (Foundation Center method) ➪ A healthy payout rate is important to us. This payout rate of 54% shows that our donors get money out to their favorite charities. Taking a look at this considerable growth, we are thrilled to see our grantmaking expand.
