This week saw an unusual step in our local events world. A license review hearing borne of an application submitted in the interests of Category 1 responders around public safety (Licensing Act 2003). In 23 years NHS experience, including 10 representing our Trust at SAG, this isn’t something I ever imagined doing. However, the experience was positive and well received. It allowed an open discussion forum between licence holders, Category 1 responders, and other interested parties to provide a robust discussion as to why there were significant safety concerns which, despite the best efforts of SAG partners, were seemingly unaddressed. I’ve said before and I continue to maintain, I am firmly pro-events but we need to learn how to operate them safely. On this occasion, the owners and operators were very understanding and are taking strong steps (with the support of SAG) to ensure future events are safe, which is now mandated through enhanced licensing conditions. Working together with operators and organisers is essential - As discussed before, the approach by individual SAGs or associate agencies is hampered by massive variation, combined with the understanding and interpretation of best practice guidance. The work toward event medical regulation is one thing, but a lot of work is indicated in the wider arena.
