The cio investment club, together with Pensions for Purpose, hosted an exclusive lunch for insurers to discuss Social and Impact Investing. The aim was to bring together a number insurers to hear from them their firms current thinking around ESG and in particular around Social and Impact Investing, the process some have taken to allocate some monies to this particular sector and what issues others have faced when thinking how to incorporate this into their investment portfolios. Many thanks to Charlotte O'Leary, Aileen Mathieson and Irshaad Ahmad for their insights, to all those who attended from the insurance industry, and to Robeco for sponsoring and hosting a most enjoyable and extremely delicious lunch at their office. This is just the start of this initiative aiming to bring together insurers and to encourage further collaboration across the market so that the industry can benefit from each others expertise and that of asset managers to help make it easier for the sector as a whole to invest in products/solutions with the intention to generate positive, measurable, social and environmental impact alongside a financial return. It was a pleasure to speak about the impact investing journey for pension funds at the Impact Summit Europe organized by Phenix Capital Group. My key takeaways: 👫We all, including pension funds, have a role in creating a more sustainable world. 📈 Good risk adjusted returns are paramount. It is a fiduciary duty to ensure a good pension. There are clear investment opportunities with attractive returns and positive impact whilst doing no harm #doublemateriality. ☝️However, it is important to consider the intentionality #theoryofchange and the measurability. 💡Impact investments are possible in private and public markets, even though some investments are more impactful than others. 🚦The absence of an impact investment benchmark or a visible track record is a challenge when considering investments.
