🌎 January to me was a month of contrast, we saw devastating fires in the US, the world passed 1.5 C in warming for the first time while the Net Zero Asset Managers (NZAM) initiative is paused and under review. Grateful to be recently back from a holiday, so I'm feeling recharged and cautiously optimistic - so what's next? I see similarities between what is happening with NZAM with developments in the carbon markets in recent years: sure it's a blow but those who continue to do good work help us distinguish between sustainable and unsustainable players. Poignant words from Joeri de Wilde at Triodos Investment Management: "The political and corporate reality is not always an accurate reflection of the actions and desires of citizens. [...] One that cannot undo the fact that a growing number of people really do want a more sustainable world." Carbon removal also has its place and I'm excited to continue working with asset managers who recognise this. 🚀

For asset managers, this moment is a chance to take ownership of their climate strategies, build resilience, and lead with purpose. In our latest blog, we discuss: ✅ How tools like the Net Zero Investment Framework 2.0 still empower progress ✅ Why transparency and collaboration are key to staying competitive ✅ The crucial role carbon removal plays in addressing hard-to-cut emissions Net zero isn’t just a moral imperative—it’s a financial one. Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards are often reported to be key advantages for Canada's critical minerals and related sectors. But how? If we aren't measuring it, tracking it and benchmarking against other regions, how can it be an advantage? Equally important, other regions are regulating ESG requirements, such as through the European Union Battery Regulation. And even organizations operating outside of but supplying into the EU will be subject to aspects of the regulation. The ESG landscape is complex. There are requirements to meet and competitive advantages to leverage. This is why BMAC is hosting a series of ESG webinars with key industry experts to explain the requirements and the ways they can be leveraged to demonstrate Canada's ESG advantage. Join us for this free informational series. To register and learn more: https://lnkd.in/gz6uk89n. And contact BMAC - Battery Metals Association of Canada if you are interested in getting involved in more important work like this that is helping to build Canada's battery industry and support the energy transition.

It was great to be featured in Net Zero Investor Spark discussing the future of carbon credits in our latest nature positive investment strategy. At Octopus Investments, we’re focussed on generating carbon removal credits through UK conservation and land management, addressing the growing demand for high-quality offsets. As Michael Toft highlighted, carbon credits are becoming essential in decarbonisation strategies, especially for hard-to-abate sectors like real estate. The challenge now is ensuring credibility and avoiding greenwashing as the market expands. Achieving #netzero—the future state where greenhouse gas emissions and removals are balanced—requires transformational changes globally on a massive scale and at a swift pace. Financing this transition poses a key challenge, with trillions of dollars needed over the next three decades. Pointing to both the financial risks of #climatechange and the potential returns to investors in addressing this challenge, policymakers and the public are looking to the investment industry for help. The CFA Institute's “Net Zero in the Balance: A Guide to Transformative Industry Thinking” aims to help the investment industry understand and fully implement net-zero investing. It provides research, insights, and tools for industry leaders, asset managers, asset owners, service providers, and regulators that emphasize the strategic importance of net-zero investing and the imperative for a mindset shift and innovative strategies to achieve net zero without compromising returns.

Regarding the Net Zero Investment Framework 2.0 (NZIF 2.0), two changes have been introduced to help investors set and implement net zero targets. The Portfolio Decarbonisation *Reference Target* has been repositioned as an ‘Objective’, and the *Portfolio Coverage Target* has been renamed the ‘Asset Alignment Target’.
