So a little while back I put myself up for nomination for an award. I'd known about the award for years but always held back on a self nomination. The criteria were - deliver top-tier business results and performance - advance the industry’s knowledge and understanding of DE&I - modernise the sector with innovative products and solutions - give back through mentoring and thought leadership There's a lot of talk about imposter syndrome lately, and the tendency for women to talk down their achievements rather than take confidence from them and recognise them, even to their own self. So this year I applied. I chose not to worry about my insecurities and I told myself a few things, - delivering? yep, I've built a business alongside Andy Jamieson that attracts over 60k visitors per annum (always striving for more!), and I've seen how our platform has been the foundation many brokers have built a living on - DE&I? yep, every day I turn up and drive a tech team, and there just aren't many of us doing that (shout out to you Tetiana George (梅玉瑛)and you Aurora Voss) - even just turning up and doing my day to day is making change - modernise? yep, the product I've built, Advisr , has brought cultural change in insurance - we've watched as the light of online as a major channel has dawned in insurance broking, building that awareness in the broker community is something I've contributed to - giving back? yep, when I get on the phone and walk with brokers as they build their businesses and work out what digital means to them, I've made a difference. Many of them feel very alone running their businesses, and a simple chat is meaningful input for them. So anyway, that's the biggest shout out to myself I've ever done. But hey, turns out the judging panel agreed with me. So I won't bother myself about how it looks to give myself a pat on the back, I'll just do it, and get on with it. Happy IWD. Our Autumn edition of #InsurTalk in London featured a panel discussion on the problem of innovation in the Insurance industry. The participants - Bernadette Tredger from Apollo, Matthew Wardle from KASKO and Piotr Piękoś from Future Processing - provided their unique insights on the complexity of the problem with some of those insights becoming prevalent themes throughout the conversation. Here are some key thoughts: ☑ the narrative needs to change - by sharing inspiring stories from insurance to make the move more attractive and exciting to those from the outside, ☑ the culture needs to change - to one in which leaders are empowered and not obstructed to give their teams the freedom to innovate. ☑ insurance job descriptions need to change - by ditching the jargon and putting reasonable requirements to appeal to a more diverse talent from outside of the industry. While these changes are certainly not the whole answer to the problem of innovation in the insurance industry, they serve as stepping stones to fostering innovative thinking. What are your views?
