I read Bill Winters post on Friday whilst sitting at an airport. I always look at the departure board and wistfully think which destination I’d like to go to.
My mind wandered a little (as it occasionally does!) and I started to compare career paths to flight paths and, more broadly, to the experience of being at an airport (which can be a joy or a nightmare depending on the airport - oh, Changi Airport Group, how I miss you 😢)
So, here goes:
𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬:
Just as airports serve as hubs with various flights to different destinations, so career paths are filled with choices and opportunities. We choose the “flight” that, at that point in time, best aligns with our goals, interests and needs.
𝐔𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐲:
Waiting at an airport involves uncertainty about the exact timing of flights and there are often delays and other unforeseen circumstances. In a career path, we are likely to encounter uncertainty about when or how we’ll reach certain milestones or achieve our goals.
Which brings me to …
𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞:
Just as we must be patient while waiting for our flight to be called, our career path often requires patience as we work toward our goals. Progress (at least our definition of ‘progress’) often takes time.
𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲:
Like flight schedules that can change due to weather or other factors, our career path may involve unexpected twists and turns. Being adaptable and open to change is important. Often, this is where the new opportunities lie. It’s our ability to identify and seize these that often defines our paths.
𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:
Airports are incredible places where people from different backgrounds and destinations come together. Similarly, our career paths involve networking, building connections and understanding different cultures, behaviours and ways of working. All of these help us (and help us grow) as we progress in our careers.
Our career paths will have ups and downs but it's about the experiences and the progress we make along the way that shapes our professional life and the friends and connections we make along the way.
Ultimately, the comparison between a career path and waiting at an airport for a flight emphasises that both involve choices, patience, adaptability and the understanding that the journey (which includes, as Bill says, "the wacky path" too) is just as important as the destination.

Looking back at my own career path, it was definitely not predictable at every turn. I've mentioned before that I had wanted to be a diplomat after graduation and I ended up joining the banking industry as a graduate trainee to fund my further studies. As it happens, I stayed in the same organisation for the next 26 years.
Later when I was running a fund management business I had established, I had not considered a return to banking until I had the opportunity to join Standard Chartered Bank. It may not have seemed like the obvious choice then, but the last eight years have turned out to amongst the most rewarding episodes in my professional life.
As the article below points out, there isn’t a “perfect” career path that one must follow. Remember to take the wacky path from time to time and you might just surprise yourself!
After helping many private equity executives land roles, I've found they all share four key success drivers:
- Understand the PE Perspective: They "get" what matters to PE firms and deliver accordingly. They craft their resumes and present their information in a way that resonates directly with PE firms.
- Have a Successful Track Record: They have achieved career success and communicate it clearly and succinctly with metrics.
- Leverage a Strong Network and Relationships: They are adept at building relationships. They leverage connections within the industry, including investors, company executives, bankers, and others, to discover job opportunities and gain referrals.
- Take Advice: They collaborate with a coach throughout their job search and interview process and actively heed their advice.

Having fallen into banking and HR quite by accident 16 years ago, I fully agree with Bill! Along the way I’ve found that the least attractive opportunities can often provide the greatest challenge and growth (you may have to bring your own fun, though!)
