Yesterday my daughter at 9 years old went to her first Scottish Championship (which she had to qualify for), had to train, prep, clean and get up at 4.30am to go and compete against kids nearly 5 years older. But why do we do it? Horses improve self esteem. When it's been a bad day, getting on your pony that loves you unconditionally is therapy (still my therapy) They teach responsibility -Pippa has to consider ‘When can I fit the horse in with my plans?’, or ‘If I can’t get there, who will feed my horse?’. Knowing that an animal is relying on you for all of its needs definitely teaches a strong sense of responsibility. They teach the value of money.Pippa has to work to pay for some horsey extra's... Yes, horses are expensive, but they teach you to be resourceful when your account is low. (Pippa has to do chores, even made horse treats to sell last year to make extra 💰) A better immune system- Fresh air, getting your hands dirty They give you the best exercise- Equestrian sports are on the list of sports where the human uses the most amount of their muscles. They teach us to be patient- They aren't like a bike, they have a brain, can be stubborn and are all motivated differently. They teach focus and ambition- Whether it’s something as simple as getting your pony to canter on the right leg, or something as big as qualifying for a championship, there’s always a goal to strive for when you have a horse. And sometimes you don't get the winning rosette, so you have to take the feedback, set the next goal and carry on. Nothing like a horse to bring your ego back down to earth. All of these are great life and eventually business or work skills we all need. Thankful, it isn't another 4.30am and 5 hour round trip today though!

Excellent article from Susan Stafford-Pooley in Horse Sport Magazine discussing in great detail the many probable reasons why Team Ireland showjumping finishes on the podium again and again. Systems and structures in place to identify and develop talent of course but before that even, a structured program of equestrian management (sounds a lot like Pony Club to me) and consistency consistency consistency at the top with leadership everyone respects, national training programs, an International team manager and on and on. It's not rocket science. It does take foresight, long-range commitment at multiple levels, sticking to a plan, and effort. THE CONNECTED CHAMPIONS HAVE GRADUATED! I've run many trainings, workshops courses and retreats over the years and this would have to be one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had. It was my privilege being in the company of 6 of the most amazing people and their horses for 8 weeks of learning, expansion and growth. I've never had such high levels of participation, engagement and curiosity and that in itself has been incredibly nourishing for me. What I've always wanted is to make a difference by teaching to create change and not just educate for general interest with the information being forgotten or lost within a week. This program inspired change from the first week; it was incredible to witness. If I can help any animal live a life they need and deserve it is a great day! If I can help that animal's person find their path to living a meaningful soul-driven life then that is also a great day. As a couple of our participants mentioned, "this program could be for anyone with or without a horse" as there is an equal measure equine understanding and connection and personal development. When you're having a problem with your animals, the first thing you need to do is look at yourself; we are a great contributor to the unwanted behaviours, health and emotional problems and it is for that reason I have intentionally written this program to include both horse and their person- it just doesn't work to exclude the human element. ----------------- ARE YOU INTERESTED TO JOIN THE NEXT PROGRAM? Workshops include a briefing and course-walks that cover the basic rules for CCE, followed by a simple casual competition. Those that have done a CCE before will be able to come in at an allotted time to walk their course and ride. For CCEA members, level awards are gift baskets from Centerline Candles. Remember that coaching, group riding and additional rounds are CCE allowances that are encouraged. CCE Strategies BEGINNER- ride around the course and attempt only the easiest obstacles or none at all. Ride in a group and with your coach. Make use of CCE Allowances that let you learn without unnecessary stress. GREEN HORSE- attempt obstacles according to how your horse is going. Ride with a friend to keep your horse relaxed and get leads over obstacles. DEVELOPING PARTNERSHIP- Attempt all the Regular obstacles and if things are going well try a Challenge obstacles. Consider two rounds to build confidence. HAVING A BAD DAY- turn it around by passing the remaining obstacles and only attempt the simplest and most inviting to finish relaxed and confident. Consider a second round. RIDING TO WIN- make a plan to score as many points as possible by jumping all the Challenge obstacles and almost everything else, but consider passing a few to maintain speed and reduce time penalties. #crosscountryequestrian #enjoyyourhorse

One of my great joys in reining is that it is a sport that I share with my wife. (I won't tell you who usually scores better!) We just got back from the Run for a Million: the premier Western Equine sports event. (spectators - we're not good enough to participate yet) I returned with a new respect for the sport, and the industry. Here are my major takeaways. 1) Competition is divided along two dimensions: skill level, and age. There are 4 skill levels and two age categories (Youth and Adult). Within each of those "buckets" there are no other restrictions. Men and Women compete against each other, and in the Adult category the age ranges from 16 to 70 (at least that's the oldest I've seen). I've simplified the categorization a bit. There are subcategories, but, in simple terms, anyone can compete against anyone else as they wish. There is complete "diversity", although no one gives that a second thought. 2) Most people involved in this sport wear their love of God and Country openly. And they accept you if you don't do the same. The tolerance is stronger than anywhere else I have experienced. 3) While the "best of the best" are very competitive with each other, they are also each others best supporters. For example, one of the very top trainers/riders has his son training with four of his fiercest rivals. I can, and have, approached some of the very best riders in the world and have been warmly received. Inclusivity is ingrained and authentic. It isn't forced or contrived. I especially liked watching the Youth Cow Horse competition. Boy can those kids ride. The young woman who won the competition knew it by the end of her ride and the smile on her face was priceless as she finished up her run by patting the herded calf on the side while completing her last maneuver - while at a tight circle gallop (a feat on it's own). Yes, I'm sure the industry has all the normal bickering and politicing that accompanies all collections of people, but overall I am really impressed by how seems to be, largely, self-governed. Participants know the rules, even the unwritten ones, and largely follow them. Personally, I think it's the horses that make the people better!

Planning your progress through the route will help you keep a clear mind throughout the marathon. 4. Get plenty of rest the day before.
